NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — The United Nations World Food Program is slowly resuming food aid to Ethiopia nearly five months after taking the extraordinary measure of suspending aid to millions of people after the discovery of a massive scheme to steal donated grain. Critics of the aid suspension, including aid groups and health workers, have called it immoral and alleged that hundreds of people have died of hunger. The U.S., the largest humanitarian donor to both Ethiopia and WFP, also paused food aid. Power said she knew people were looking for an exact date that food aid would resume. “But we have come a very long way in a short period of time, and our ambition, our heartfelt ambition, is to restart food assistance as soon as possible,” she said.

By Haile Henok – With over 60% of the world’s uncultivated arable land, Africa holds tremendous potential to be a global breadbasket. A key challenge is lack of knowledge about modern farming techniques and limited access to agricultural technologies like fertilizers. Russia’s PhosAgro, the world’s leading fertilizer producer, is working to change this equation through online farmer training programs and cross-continental cooperation. The online training incorporates real-world case studies and technologies like vertical farming. “Helping develop Africa’s agriculture sector is a priority.”Though challenges remain, PhosAgro’s blended model of E-learning and on-the-ground cooperation is key to unlocking Africa’s immense potential.

A senior Ethiopian official has accused militiamen in the Amhara region of attempting to overthrow both the regional and federal governments, as clashes between Fano militiamen and the Ethiopian National Defence Force (ENDF) continue. The situation has escalated into Ethiopia’s most severe security crisis since the end of the two-year civil war in the neighboring Tigray region. AdvertisementFano, a part-time militia, initially supported the ENDF during the Tigray War but their relationship soured over federal authorities’ attempts to weaken regional paramilitary groups. Protests erupted in Amhara after Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed disbanded security forces from all 11 regions and integrated them into the police or national army. Protesters accused the government of undermining Amhara’s security, while the government claimed it was necessary for national unity.

Addis Abeba – The World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed concerns over the ongoing violence in the restive Amhara region where months-long hostilities between government forces and the non-state Fano militia has escalated over the past few weeks leading to the declaration of state of emergency. On Sunday, Director General of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom (PhD) said “humanitarian access is difficult due to blockage of roads; communication is difficult due to internet suspension,” stating that “conflicts have an immediate impact on people’s health and can have grave, long-lasting consequences on health systems”. “We call for uninterrupted access and protection of health care in Amhara, so [that] WHO and partners can continue our work. According to the UN, the Amhara region continues to grapple with already dire humanitarian and health situations. An ongoing Cholera outbreak has affected 18 woredas across the region, with a total of 2,343 reported cases, 40 unverified deaths as of 27 July 2023, since it was first reported on 23 July.
