Two Canadian figure skating duos got off to a strong start at the Grand Prix de France on Friday in Angers. The 39-year-old Stellato-Dudek, who is the oldest first-time medallist in Grand Prix history, is in position to set the record for oldest Grand Prix winner. A victory on Saturday will also give Stellato-Dudek and Deschamps a spot in December's Grand Prix final in Torino. The Grand Prix de France is the third ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating event of the season, following Skate Canada International and Skate America.

Windstorm causes nearly 200,000 households to lose power in southwest B.C.
Crews have begun restoring power to more than 200,000 households on Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands, the Sunshine Coast and the Lower Mainland that lost electricity Friday night as a windstorm pounded southwest B.C. As of 1 p.m. PT on Saturday, more than 73,000 customers remained without power. Environment Canada issued wind warnings Friday night for Metro Vancouver, several parts of Vancouver Island including Greater Victoria, the Southern Gulf Islands and the Sunshine Coast. Wind gusts of 90km/h were expected throughout the night, the weather service warned, and up to 100km/h on western Vancouver Island. Hydro crews and contractor crews are working to restore power," she said.

The indictment alleges those charged were involved in a campaign started in 2002 and meant to intimidate the man, identified only as John Doe 1, to return to China. The indictment says An told the man it would be an “endless misery” for John Doe 1 and his son, identified as John Doe 2, until the charges were resolved. A relative from China was even forced to travel to the U.S. to try to convince John Doe 1 to return, it is alleged. Those charged also cased the Long Island home of John Doe 1’s son, going through his mail and trying to open a rear door, prosecutors allege. The plan was the man could tell his own experience to John Doe 2 in a bid to ease his concerns about what treatment his father may face.

Investigation underway after drone drops suspected firearm at Mission, B.C. prison

The Union of Correctional Officers says a drone was dropped delivering what is suspected to be a firearm. The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) is investigating after a drone dropped a suspected firearm at a medium-security prison in Mission, B.C., prompting a lockdown of the facility on Thursday. Officials ordered an "exceptional search" of the federal prison, located about 75 kilometres east of Vancouver. John Randle, regional president of the UCCO, said in an interview that the threat at the Mission Institution was downgraded late Friday.

Sipekne'katik First Nation elects first female chief

Michelle Glasgow has been elected as the first female chief of the Sipekne'katik First Nation, after winning a narrow three-way race. She won the election by an 18-vote margin against Brandon Maloney, with outgoing chief Mike Sack 38 votes behind. A total of 1,011 votes were cast with Glasgow winning 344 of them. The new chief, who was born and raised in the community in central Nova Scotia, previously served on council, alongside Maloney.
