The John Donne Edition, so prepare to Piss Off Early, Tomorrow’s Saturday. Samuel Johnson had some harsh words for the metaphysical poets. Johnson also observed that the metaphysical poets can’t leave well enough alone. If I were in the mood to pick a fight I would suggest to Johnson that the such instances should be judged as they come; the metaphysical poets deserve a more scrupulous enumeration. Often the poets of this school will start in midst of something as Donne does here.

Three different Stars scored their first goals of the season, as Denis Gurianov, Ty Dellandrea and Jamie Benn each broke through in the 11th game of the season. Gurianov scored in the opening two minutes of the game, roofing a shot past Connor Ingram after a hearty Stars forecheck. “I think we had a lot of guys get a goal tonight that needed one,” Stars coach Pete DeBoer said. Doug Ford’s conservative provincial government tabled legislation that would unilaterally impose a contract on education workers, and levy hefty fines for striking. The move escalates a bitter dispute over pay for education workers, including custodians, early childhood educators and educational assistants. It insisted that “Bill 28 isn’t just an attack on education workers’ collective bargaining rights, it is an attack on all workers’ rights”. The Ford government’s trampling of #onted workers' rights is an affront to quality publicly funded public education. @CTFFCEpresident @eduint https://t.co/tLZWbAQ6Ee — David Edwards (@daveswords) November 1, 2022He went on to welcome international solidarity demonstrated towards Ontarian educators by education unions around the world.

‘Freedom Convoy’ leader challenged over assertion the protest was never told to leaveOTTAWA — "Freedom Convoy" organizer Tamara Lich insists she was never directly told to leave Ottawa last winter when protesters in hundreds of vehicles blocked streets around Parliament Hill as they called for an end to COVID-19 mandates, even after the Emergencies Act was invoked. During cross-examination Friday, Lich told the Public Order Emergency Commission that when police told protesters in a mid-February meeting to depart, she took it as a suggestion. The commission also heard from a protester Friday who made a point of joining the protest after the Emergencies Act was invoked. One of the people tasked with running security for the protesters testified early Friday evening. “I think an awful lot of Canadians have been really made concerned by what testimony they're hearing this week at the emergencies act inquiry,” Trudeau said.

The Court of Appeal sentenced Sharma to time already served and the Crown appealed the case to the Supreme Court of Canada. "Maximum sentences are a reasonable proxy for the seriousness of an offence and, accordingly, the provisions do not deprive individuals of their liberty." The will of Parliament and the electorateThe Supreme Court said maximum sentences are designed to signal that a particular crime is serious and warrants consistency in sentencing, regardless of the offender. The justices said that conditional sentences are sometimes the only tool that judges can use to apply restorative justice principles and craft fair sentences for Indigenous peoples. The dissenting justices also said assigning maximum sentences to specific crimes does not demonstrate that they are "necessarily serious" but only that they are "potentially serious."

The great Howie Meeker, an NHL legend both on the ice and in the broadcasting booth (along with his sidekick “Peter Puck”) was born on this date in 1923. Today on Art’s History, however, I’m celebrating a lesser-known part of the late Toronto Maple Leaf’s hockey career and legacy. When a by-election was called in the Ontario riding of Waterloo South in 1951, Canada’s federal Tory leader, George Drew, personally invited this Maple Leafs’ star to be his party’s candidate. I had the honour of interviewing Mr. Meeker in the 1990s for an article I wrote for the Toronto Star about this unique intersection of Canada’s national sport and politics. So, here’s to the memory of Howie Meeker on his birthday!

© Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation The popular Stanley Park train has been cancelled during Bright Nights again this year, derailed by failing vintage engine parts. The Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation says its Bright Nights show will go on this year, but once more without the popular Stanley Park train that has entertained park-goers for decades. Two years ago, both Bright Nights and another popular event, the Halloween Ghost Train, were stopped in their tracks by the COVID-19 pandemic. Safety is the number one priority for the park board, and a complete analysis of the mechanical issues is needed to determine next steps, the statement said. "We know this year's Bright Nights will still bring joy to families, and we encourage folks to come and donate for an important cause, Jackson said.

Results from the most recent round of licence bids reveal that ExxonMobil, one of the world's largest oil companies, continues to see a future in Newfoundland and Labrador's offshore industry. © Terry Roberts/CBC Jim Keating is CEO of Newfoundland and Labrador's government-owned oil and gas corporation. Results of the latest bid round were announced Wednesday by the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board, which regulates the offshore oil industry. Keating said he was disappointed in the lack of bids but believes future land sales may have a more positive result. Parsons defended the provincial government's eagerness to build the offshore oil sector, saying there remains a strong demand for oil products and Newfoundland and Labrador offers the ideal balance of low-emission oil production, affordability and secure access.

Doctors and nurses are warning that the “unprecedented” step of moving critically ill teenagers into regular ICUs amid a surge of children suffering from respiratory illnesses at Ontario’s pediatric hospitals lays bare the precarious conditions facing the health-care system. Health officials predict both RSV and influenza to peak in December, meaning there will be a two-month period of sustained pressures on critical care capacity, Simpson said. Ontario has about 100 pediatric ICU beds at its five pediatric hospitals, though Simpson said the system is able to surge up to 130 beds. Warner said older teens are similar to adults in their physiology and it will be safe for them to be cared for in adult ICUs. “But that adult ICU nurse or doctor could not care for the five-year-old with RSV.
