The labour coalition against the legislation included construction unions that endorsed Ford in the June 2 election. Ford said his government didn’t make the decision to introduce back-to-work legislation and impose contracts — using the Charter’s notwithstanding clause — lightly. The plan to repeal the bill renders moot a pending ruling from the province’s labour board on the strike by support staff. Last Thursday, the government passed the bill that pre-emptively banned CUPE’s strike and imposed a four-year contract on school staff. Under Bill 28, CUPE members faced individual fines of $4,000 daily and the union $500,000, a tab of $220 million per day.

In comments posted by the press service of his Concord catering firm on Russia's Facebook equivalent VKontakte, Prigozhin said: "We have interfered (in U.S. elections), we are interfering and we will continue to interfere. The remark was posted on the eve of the U.S. midterm elections in response to a request for comment from a Russian news site. Prigozhin, who is often referred to as "Putin's chef" because his catering company operates Kremlin contracts, has been formally accused of sponsoring Russia-based "troll farms" that seek to influence U.S. politics. In September, he admitted to founding the Kremlin-aligned Wagner Group mercenary organization, which is active in Syria, Africa and Ukraine. Last Friday, it opened a defence technology centre in St. Petersburg, a further step by Prigozhin to highlight his military credentials.

Stop the political games and work together – or face the utter collapse of our public health careFederal, provincial and territorial governments must work together with frontline nurses to fix the health care crisis. As bad as all these numbers are, they are just symptoms of the larger disease plaguing our health care system. Nurses’ evidence-based proposals are focussed on what we call the three “Rs”: Retaining nurses in the public health care system. If we delay action any longer, we face the utter collapse of our public health care. We must all put aside the political games and work with urgency and common purpose to save our cherished public health care system.

A reader notes that an episode earlier this year of the Canadian TV series Murdoch Mysteries was set in Almonte — though it wasn’t actually filmed here. A plot summary says “Murdoch, Ogden, and Harry join Crabtree and his ragtag team of street kids for a fundraising basketball tournament in Almonte, a village outside Ottawa. A key plot point is a fire that supposedly destroyed part of Mill Street that year — which did in fact happen. A post on Linda Seccaspina’s local history blog quotes a Perth Courier report:Fire swept through Almonte last Friday, 10th. The sufferers are the Commercial Hotel, West’s General Store, Patterson’s Drug Store, Kaufman’s Hardware Store.

PM free to reopen Constitution if he has problem with notwithstanding clause: FordOTTAWA — Ontario Premier Doug Ford raised the spectre of a fresh constitutional battle between Ottawa and the provinces on Monday even as he indicated his willingness to repeal controversial legislation that used the notwithstanding clause. The Ford government invoked the clause in back-to-work legislation passed last week that imposed a new contract on 55,000 education workers. The use of the clause sparked criticism from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and others who accused the Ford government of trampling on workers’ rights. Following Ford's challenge to reopen the Constitution, Trudeau said Monday Canadians are focused on more immediate challenges such as rising costs, climate change and preparing for the next pandemic. “These are the things that are top of mind for Canadians, not reopening the Constitution,” the prime minister said.

In the first national election since the violent Jan. 6 insurrection, the final days of the campaign focused on fundamental questions about the nation’s political values. Biden’s predecessor, Donald Trump, was holding his final rally of the campaign in Ohio. Trump has long falsely claimed he lost the 2020 election only because Democrats cheated and has even begun raising the possibility of election fraud this year. Meanwhile, at a Sunday Trump rally in Miami, a reference to Pelosi prompted chants of “Lock her up!“ — a stark reminder of the nation’s deep divide. It could be an early indicator of GOP midterm strength should Wexton’s seat flip to her Republican challenger, Hung Cao.

OTTAWA — Canada’s national spy agency believed invoking the Emergencies Act to deal with the self-styled “Freedom Convoy” protests last winter could ratchet up tensions, fuel radical anti-government sentiments and increase the risk of extremist violence, the Emergencies Act inquiry heard Monday. The CSIS document was revealed as Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens testified to the inquiry about the convoy blockade of the Ambassador Bridge. Over 18 days of testimony, the Emergencies Act inquiry has seen evidence of police intelligence that showed law enforcement agencies believed the convoy movement — launched to protest COVID-19 health measures — included anti-government activists and threats to public safety and police officers. Describing police concerns that protesters could return in even greater numbers, Dilkens said the Emergencies Act would send a signal that any new blockade would not be tolerated. By Feb. 7, the Windsor blockade had taken hold.
