EDMONTON, Alberta — Colin Miller scored his first goal as a Star in the second period of Saturday’s win over Edmonton, hammering a slap shot from the blue line to beat Jack Campbell. The Oilers power play entered the day ranked second in the league at 34.2%. Before the game, Stars coach Pete DeBoer said he hoped to avoid the Edmonton power play vs. the Dallas penalty kill. He made 11 saves in the first period, including two on odd-man rushes resulting from Stars misplays on the power play. The last Stars power play could have gone better.

They’re off to an 8-3-1 start, the team’s best start since 2015-16, when they were the top team in the Western Conference. At the conclusion of the Stars’ win in Edmonton, no team had more regulation wins than Dallas’ eight. On Saturday afternoon, they received big games from Jamie Benn (hat trick) and Jason Robertson (one goal, two assists). The Stars have won three straight games and will try to sweep their road trip when they visit Winnipeg on Tuesday night. “Your game, from a coaching perspective is never exactly where you want it to be,” Stars coach Pete DeBoer said.

“The plaintiff has no proof that Donald Lee Izzett Jr. died as the result of any act committed by Shane Guenther,” Speetjens wrote. After graduating from UCSB, he moved to West Hollywood at 963 Hancock Avenue with Shane Guenther. Shane Guenther and Donnie Izzett traveled throughout Florida and the Washington DC areas. They are known to have spent time in Santa Monica, Los Angeles, West Hollywood, Santa Barbara and UCSB in the winter/spring of 1995. This is the first in a series of stories investigating the disappearance of Donnie Izzett Jr.

Former Ontario finance minister to run for federal Liberals in Toronto-area ridingMISSISSAUGA, Ont. — A former Ontario finance minister will be the federal Liberal candidate in an upcoming byelection in the Toronto area that's set to be called later this month. A statement from the party says Charles Sousa, who represented a provincial riding in Mississauga, Ont., for more than a decade and served as finance minister in the Liberal government of premier Kathleen Wynne, will run federally in the Mississauga-Lakeshore riding. A Liberal has represented Mississauga-Lakeshore since the 1990s, with the exception of the years between 2011 and 2015 when a Conservative held the seat. Another lifelong Mississauga resident, Mary Kidnew, is set to run for the Green Party.

We didn’t have to think much about what to write. But that is not to say there isn’t anything to write about; here are a few examples. Anthony Albanese’s lead on preferred prime minister has slipped from 61-22 to 54-27, and he is down two on approval to 59% and up four on disapproval to 33%. Essential Poll and power pricesLast Tuesday’s Essential Poll revealed what Australians thought about intervention in the energy market as power prices soar. I recently read that even after the scheme was found to be unlawful, Prime Minister Scott Morrison insisted it go ahead.

When Alexandra Mozil does her training sessions at a community centre in Calgary, people often stop to watch. But I’m not going to.”Mozil does not bend to the pressure she gets to change her breaking style to please judges and others in this new Olympic sport, so she’s not about to give in to the merely curious bystanders. “I’ve always been told that my breaking style is not acceptable and I never cared about people telling me what to do,” Mozil says. “You can’t hide who you are or your style,” Mozil says. “At the end of the day, (you have to) just be yourself, just do your moves, your style and have fun in the moment.

I’ve been on a lot of first dates where it’s obvious that either one of us, or both, is not interested. I suggested a really cute neighbourhood near my place for the walk and Edgar agreed to it. I asked a few questions while he was talking to bring him back to discovering what similarities we had, but he seemed happy to tell me all about himself. It was more that he was just nervous or wanted to tell me everything I needed to know about him. Tell us about your best, worst, weirdest and wildest dates for the Dating Diaries column and we’ll go from there.

Maple Leafs players often claim they’re performing under a microscope in Toronto. “It’s one game at a time, obviously, but looking at the big picture it’s a really big test,” avowed Giordano. But we consider ourselves a great team as well. “In the NHL, it’s not just the best team that wins, it’s usually the team that plays the best. “They’ve been a great team in the league for many, many years and they’re off to a tremendous start.

A new territory north of 60 moved one step closer to creation on this date in 1992. With the polls closed and the votes counted in the area of the Northwest Territories that would comprise Nunavut, almost 79 per cent of voters, the vast, vast majority being Inuit, supported the proposal. A few months later, in Iqaluit, Prime Minister Brian Mulroney signed the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement between Tunngavik Federation of Nunavut (now Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated), the Government of Canada and the Government of the Northwest Territories. This remains the largest land claims agreement between Ottawa and Indigenous Peoples ever signed. Nunavut would come into being, officially, on April 1, 1999.

FEEDBACKRegarding the university student whose friend is extremely anxious (Oct. 7):“I read your column daily. ‘Sky’ cared enough about her friend to write to you and ask for advice, and it is absolutely not their responsibility to care for their suffering friend. Using rational thought is not helpful, and in fact can be very hurtful because it often results in the suffering person feeling like they are even more broken. Our main issue is this: She likes to sleep with the window open for fresh air, but I can’t sleep with all the street noises. I also think it’s a waste of energy to heat the house and keep the window open.

That was a recent conversation I had in a press box, a reminder of how many hockey questions involved numbers. A spectacular player such as Karlsson could certainly put a Stanley Cup contender over the top, if the numbers add up. The cap is $82.5 million and 15 teams exceed that amount today, with Vegas leading the way at just over $96 million. Vegas, Toronto and Philadelphia sit at the maximum, so it’s player out, player in for those three. Numbers will be flying as contenders search for that dream addition to put them over the top — maybe even Karlsson.
