The local represents educational assistants, early childhood educators and other school support staff. The union representing striking school support workers and the Annapolis Valley Regional Centre for Education (AVRCE) have reached a tentative agreement. Similarly, lead ECEs in the Annapolis Valley make $27.37 an hour at the top, while those in the Halifax area make $35.14. Meanwhile, school support workers on the South Shore, who are represented by NSGEU Local 70, are still on strike, but the union says they're expected to rejoin contract talks soon. Schools in both centres have been open during the strikes, but some students who rely on support workers have been forced to stay home.

“We cannot have laws that facilitate second-class citizenship by putting up barriers in front of marginalized people.”The so-called Quebec “secularism” law known as Bill 21 will face challenges at the Montreal Court of Appeal this week, with hearing beginning today. Enacted in 2019, Bill 21 prohibits public sector workers in positions of authority (judges, school teachers, police officers etc) from wearing religious symbols at work, including hijabs, niqabs, turbans and kippas. While the Superior Court has agreed with assertions made by opposing groups such as the Canadian Civil Liberties Association and the National Council of Canadian Muslims, the court also upheld the law, ruling that it doesn’t violate the constitution. While Bill 21 is shielded from most court challenges over violations of fundamental rights by the Quebec government’s pre-emptive use of the Charter’s notwithstanding clause, the federal government has stated its intention to join the legal challenge to the law if it gets as far as the Supreme Court of Canada. cannabis-fraud-gs1107The Ontario Securities Commission has accepted a settlement on lesser charges in the first fraud case enforcement staff pursued in the fledgling Canadian cannabis business. They also “vastly overstated” a figure for sales in the first month of business for Growlite, according to the OSC panel. As part of the settlement agreement, Ward said he did not personally receive any of the money Canada Cannabis advanced to Growlite, and had had no prior relationship, experience or association with Growlite. “While we note that there is no agreement for payment of any administrative monetary penalty … the significant non-monetary sanctions, in the context of the entire settlement agreement, place the agreement within the reasonable range,” the panel said. According to the OSC settlement, Cronos improperly recognized $7.6 million in revenue in interim statements of its first three quarters of 2019 in connection with three wholesale cannabis transactions.

Here’s why:In March, to get top-performing young players paid more sooner, MLB and its players association agreed on a $50-million (U.S.) pool for pre-arbitration players. Pre-arb players may end up making four times more than their regular salary through awards. He’s one of those pre-arbitration players vying for bonus pool money and also a fringe candidate for the AL Cy Young. “It’s ridiculous that it hasn’t been changed, especially with the amount of money that’s at stake,” Green said. I’ll still be here to debate the awards, but my days of weighing in with an official ballot have come to an end.

WINCHESTER, Va. (AP) — A federal trial for a former Civil War re-enactor accused of planting a pipe bomb at a Virginia battlefield and threatening to disrupt other events has been set for next year. Gerald Leonard Drake, 63, had been on the docket for a jury trial in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Virginia starting Dec. 16. A federal indictment unsealed last month accused Drake of planting a pipe bomb at Cedar Creek Battlefield, about 80 miles (130 kilometers) west of Washington, during an annual re-enactment in October 2017. His attorney, Donald Pender of Charlottesville, filed a motion last week asking that Drake be released until trial. In reality, according to the indictment, Drake was a Civil War re-enactor who regularly participated in events at Cedar Creek until he was expelled from his unit in 2014.

© Karen Bleier/AFP/Getty Images Millions of people start their days by solving a crossword puzzle, but how inclusive are the clues, solutions and bylines? Crossword puzzles are a common pastime for millions of people around the world, but some crossword hobbyists says diversity is often lacking in who designs the puzzles and what's represented in them. A recent documentary, Across and Down, dove into this and found that women, Indigenous, Black and queer-identifying people have been almost invisible in crossword puzzles. It aired on CBC's The Passionate Eye on Oct. 28, and highlights a movement to diversify and make crosswords a more inclusive gaming culture. Word lists largely rely on words previously been used in crosswords, and if ones in the past haven't been very inclusive, then subsequent word lists won't be either, Nediger said.
