DHAKA, Nov 20, 2023 (BSS) - Five dengue patients died and 1,197 were admitted to different hospitals in the country during the last 24 hours till 8 am today. On November 15, Bangladesh witnessed 24 dengue deaths, the highest in a single day this year. "The death toll from dengue infection crossed the 1500-mark as the authorities recorded 1,554 dengue deaths between January 1 and November 20 this year," a press release from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said. "During the period, 286 dengue patients were hospitalised in Dhaka city while 1,197 were admitted to different hospitals outside the capital city," the DGHS daily statement added. With the new cases, the total number of patients rose to 3,02,452, the statement said, adding: "This year, some 2,96,254 patients were released from different hospitals out of the total patients."

Dengue cases in Bangladesh have crossed the 300,000 mark this year, with the country logging 1,549 deaths by the viral disease, according to bdnews24.com news portal. The news portal, citing data from the Directorate General of Health Services, said Bangladesh’s overall tally of dengue infections stood at 301,255 this year. On Sunday alone, 1,291 new cases of the viral fever were reported, added the portal. After August saw 71,976 cases and 342 deaths, a record 79,598 dengue cases and 396 deaths were recorded in September amid the worst outbreak of the disease, while 67,769 cases and 359 deaths were reported in October. BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has led two quick processions in Dhaka on the second day of the 48-hour strike called by the party as part of its protest refusing the ‘non-participatory’ schedule for the 12th general election. As many as thirty leaders and activists took part in the processions led by Rizvi. “The government is mired in darkness. Two technocrat ministers and one state minister, along with three of the prime minister’s advisers have submitted resignation letters on orders from Sheikh Hasina ahead of the election. They may still work until the resignation letters are accepted, Cabinet Secretary Md Mahbub Hossain said on Monday. They include Science and Technology Minister Yeafesh Osman, Post and Telecommunications Minister Mustafa Jabbar and State Minister for Planning Shamsul Alam. Apart from them, Mashiur Rahman, the prime minister’s economic affairs adviser, Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury, power, energy and mineral resources adviser, and International Affairs Adviser Gowher Rizvi submitted resignation papers as well, confirmed Mahbub.
