DHAKA, Nov 15, 2023 (BSS) - Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) today arrested Jatiyatabadi thana Jubo Dal general secretary in a case lodged over sabotage in the city. The arrestee Titu, 45, son of Shafiuddin at Jatrabari thana area, has a case pending against him under special powers act. Confirming the matter, RAB-10 Deputy Director and Assistant Director (Ops) Aminul Islam said that a team of RAB-10 conducted a combing operation in Demra police station area of the capital and managed to detain him. During initial quizzing, Titu confessed his involvement in the incident. He has been handed over to the concerned thana, said the RAB official.

The Islami Andolan Bangladesh protest march to the Election Commission headquarters has ended after police blocked the procession in Dhaka’s Shantinagar. The procession, which aimed to protest the announcement of the schedule for the upcoming general election, started from the north gate at Baitul Mukarram National Mosque around 3:30 am on Wednesday. It proceeded through the Nightingale Intersection to Kakrail and then to the Shantinagar Intersection. Police blocked the road with barricades on three sides. The procession breached the first level of the two-tiered security barricades, but could not cross the second.

The Election Commission is set to declare the date and particulars of the 12th general election on Wednesday evening. In 2014, the BNP and like-minded parties boycotted the 10th general election over similar demands. The United States has called on the major political parties of the country to settle conflicts with “unconditional” discussions, but such talks have yet to start. Several media reports quoted Zahidul Islam, 38, president of Awami Jubo League's Sonora Union under Sundarganj upazila in Gaibandha district, as saying "They cut my tendons, hacked indiscriminately and left me to die only for my allegiance with Awami League". The beneficiaries will be given knowledge on how the communities can reducethe need for extracted water from ground sources and to reduce contaminationof surface water with pesticides, sediment, metals, and fertilizers. It will also work for creating demand for improvements to the availabilityand standard of water services in the communities and build awareness. Focus will be given on supplementary irrigation through preserved surfacewater, promoting water efficient technology to save ground water and preserverain water in the natural reservoir, including canal, beel, pond. In addition to drinking and irrigation water, the project will focusinitially on community institution building and awareness-raising in thecommunities as there is demand for improved water management systems.

The Election Commission will announce the date and details of the 12th general election on Wednesday evening. Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal will announce the schedule in a televised speech at 7 pm Wednesday, according to Md Jahangir Alam, spokesperson for the commission. The countdown to the election already began on Nov 1 with regulations stipulating a Jan 29 deadline. They came up with the call at a press conference held at Zahur Hossain Chowdhury Auditorium of the Jatiya Press Club today. Gazipur reported the second-highest cases of arson attacks, with most of them taking place at night. Most of the arson attacks occurred at night, particularly between 6 pm and 6 am, according to the fire service. DHAKA, Nov 14, 2023 (BSS) - A court here today sentenced four people to life term imprisonment for murdering a carpenter named Sheikh Mohammad Abbas in city's Uttar Kalshi area in 2003. The convicts-- Panchananda Sarker, Abdus Sattar, Laksman and Swapan-- were also fined Taka 20,000 each and six months more behind the bars in default of the payment. According to the case, the victim was stabbed to death with sharp weapons on his way to home on May 11 in 2003. Victim's brother Sheikh Mohammad Akkas filed the case with Pallabi Thana the next day. Charge sheets were pressed against a total of 10 by the then Pallabi Thana Sub-Inspector Mirash Uddin.
