Bangladesh records 11 dengue cases, no deaths
Hospitals in Bangladesh have registered 10 new cases of dengue fever in a day, taking the tally of infections since Jan 1 to 1,271 after the worst outbreak last year. The death toll from the mosquito-borne disease remained unchanged, with no fatalities in the daily count published by the Directorate General of Health Services on Saturday. The new cases included five in Dhaka and six outside the capital. In 2023, Bangladesh recorded 321,179 hospitalisations and 1,705 deaths from the viral disease, and the outbreak has continued this year. Experts say dengue may affect Bangladesh throughout the year from now on, not just in the monsoon, if the authorities do not move to prevent the disease.

Hasina meets Ukraine's Zelensky at Munich Security Conference
Prior to the meeting with Zelensky, Germany's federal minister for Economic Cooperation and Development paid a call on the Bangladesh leader at the same venue. The premier also held a bilateral meeting with her Dutch counterpart Mark Rutte earlier in the day. Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and British Foreign Secretary David Cameron paid separate calls on Hasina at the hotel. The prime minister arrived in Germany on Feb 15 for a three-day official visit to attend the security conference. She will leave Munich on Sunday and is expected to arrive in Dhaka on Feb 19.

Technical glitch briefly disrupts metro rail service
Metro rail service has resumed after a technical issue at Pallabi station halted operations for around 30 minutes. The disruption was caused by a malfunctioning train door on Saturday afternoon, according to Additional Superintendent Mahmood Khan of MRT Police. "Service at Pallabi station was interrupted at 3 pm due to this malfunction, affecting the operation of other trains as well. The problem was resolved, and normal service resumed by 3:30 pm," he said. Officials at the Dhaka Mass Transit Company Ltd, the entity overseeing metro rail operations, could not be reached for comment.

PM holds meetings with world leaders
MUNICH, Germany Feb 16, 2024 (BSS) - Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today held meetings with several global leaders, including her Denmark and Qatar counterparts, on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference (MSC) 2024. Sheikh Hasina held meetings with Denmark Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Premier and Foreign Minister of Qatar Abdulrahman Al-Thani at the conference venue, Hotel Bayerischer Hof in Munich. Earlier in the morning, President of the Women Political Leaders Silvana Koch-Mehrin paid a call on Bangladesh Premier at the bilateral meeting room of the Place of Residence. Among others, Foreign Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud and Senior Secretary of the ministry Masud Bin Momen were present during the meetings. The Munich Security Conference 2024 is being held in German city Munich from February 16 to 18.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has called for vigilance to prevent Bangladesh from becoming a haven for anti-liberation forces and sliding backwards. Hasina made the call during a reception organised by Bangladeshi expatriates in Germany's Munich on Friday, according to state news agency Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha. Virginia home blast kills firefighter, injures 11 people
WASHINGTON, Feb 17, 2024 (BSS/AFP) - A house explosion in northern Virginia killed one firefighter and injured at least 11 people on Friday evening, authorities said. James Williams, assistant chief of the local fire department, described the scene of the blast as "total devastation." "There's a debris field well into the street and into the neighboring homes," he told a news conference late Friday. Fire and rescue workers were sent to the home in Sterling, Virginia, around 7:40 pm (0040 GMT Saturday) "for an investigation," according to Williams. Nine firefighters and two civilians were taken to nearby hospitals, Williams said, adding that their injuries ranged from "severe" to "less severe."

Panic spreads as gunfire, shelling rock Teknaf border
On Friday, Shah Porir Dwip and St Martin's Island were rocked by deafening sounds of shelling from across the Naf River. "We heard two heavy explosions from the Myanmar border across Shah Porir Dwip," said Abdus Salam, a local union council member. The conflict caused fishermen to stop their activities in the Naf River, according to Khorshed Alam, a representative from St Martin's Island.
