Bangladesh's inflation jumps to 9.86% in January despite monetary tightening
Consumer prices in Bangladesh appeared to stabilise towards the end of 2023 but the trend did not continue into the new year. Headline inflation rose to 9.86 percent in January, up by 1.29 percentage points year-on-year, according to the latest data published by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS). After surging to 9.93 percent in October last year, inflation slowed to 9.49 percent and 9.41 percent in November and December. Amid soaring prices, general inflation hit an 11-year high of 9.94 percent in May 2023, and continued to be a headache for policymakers. The central bank has since adopted various measures to tighten the supply of money in a bid to reign in inflation.

Though not every co-op has a meal plan, each one offers unique cooking opportunities unavailable at campus dorms. They share similar cooking principles with a vegetarian meal plan and collaborative dinners. The Watermargin meal plan runs from Sunday to Thursday and most shopping is conducted by stewards at eitherTrader Joes or Walmart. For those who miss enjoying the kitchen together, cooking in the co-ops may be the answer.

A New Genre for 2024: Trying Out Thrillers
The Housemaid’s Secret is rated 4.28 on Goodreads and won the Goodreads Choice Award for 2023 Best Mystery and Thriller. The final thriller book I read, and very much enjoyed, is None of this is True by Lisa Jewell. If you decide to pick up this thriller, I really recommend checking the trigger warnings first as it does broach some difficult topics. Leaderboard 2If you are interested in trying out a new genre like me, I would say it is worth it. I definitely plan to read more thrillers, as they are the perfect bingeable travel genre for long flights or car rides.

Frustration boiling over as land acquisition, development setbacks plague Jagannath University's new campus
Construction of Jagannath University's new campus in Keraniganj is ongoing. However, progress has been hampered by the unresolved status of 4.61 hectares of land, causing delays in the land development tendering process. The government announced plans to build a new campus for the university at Taghoria in Keraniganj in September 2016 in the wake of student protests demanding a residential hall. The university received funds of Tk 9 billion at that time. Despite the completion of the lake construction, the university has yet to acknowledge it.

300 Myanmar nationals repatriated
— AFPBangladesh has completed the repatriation of 330 Myanmar nationals, many of whom were members of their armed forces and border security, after they fled the war in Rakhine state, reports bdnews24.com. The remaining 165 were sent through the same process around 4 pm, said Md Shariful Islam, a spokesperson for the Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB). According to the BGB, the Myanmar nationals were granted shelter in two schools in Cox's Bazar's Teknaf and Bandarban's Ghumdhum. Early on Thursday morning, the Myanmar nationals were taken to the Navy jetty at Inani under strict security. The two countries then completed the written formalities and the 330 Myanmar nationals were officially handed over to the delegation around 11am.

'Can anything be done?': Education minister says parents sought undue favours for medical college hopefuls
Education Minister Mohibul Hassan Chowdhoury has revealed that numerous parents sent him text messages seeking 'unscrupulous benefits' for their children in the medical college admission test. The revelation came as over 2 million students nationwide began taking their SSC and equivalent exams on Thursday. Breaking from tradition, Mohibul held a media briefing at the International Mother Language Institute instead of visiting an exam centre. During the briefing, he lamented the 'unfortunate' behaviour of some parents, urging them not to abandon their moral principles. The MBBS enrolment exam was held across the country on Feb 10.
