Traders demand an end to highway toll extortion to curb prices
Controlling the prices of essential commodities will not be possible unless the collection of illegal tolls on highways during the transportation of goods is put to an end, trade leaders say. They identified it as a key factor driving the price of daily essentials during a meeting organised by the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) at its headquarters in Dhaka’s Motijheel on Wednesday to address price control of daily necessities during Ramadan.

14 dead, 21 injured as pick-up overturns in India’s Madhya Pradesh
At least fourteen people have died and 21 others suffered injuries after a pickup overturned in India’s Madhya Pradesh. The accident took place near Badjar village of Dindori district on Wednesday, according to a report by NDTV. A group of villagers were returning home to Devari village after attending an event when the pick-up carrying them overturned after the driver lost control of the vehicle. The locals and police took the injured to the nearby community health centre for medical treatment. Expressing his grief over the accident, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced financial aid of 400,000 Indian rupees each to families of the dead.

Cornell Researchers Develop Nanofiber Bandage to Enhance Healing
An interdisciplinary team of Cornell researchers developed a nanofiber-coated cotton bandage that utilizes the antibiotic and environmentally sustainable properties of Lawsone, a ring-shaped compound found in henna leaves. A bandage that can both fight infection and enhance healing must have bioactive agents — compounds that directly influence the biological function of cells and can therefore be used in biomedical applications. Many cotton-based bandages on the market add cost-efficient synthetic materials such as polyester to enhance wound healing. To combat this low solubility while still using sustainable materials, the team used cyclodextrin, a large molecule that binds Lawsone. As for future developments, the team seeks to expand upon their research by using alternative materials like Curcumin and Quercetin.

Orchestra preparing for Sunday concert
The Beatrice Regional Orchestra will perform a concert on Sunday afternoon at the Hevelone Center. “Anyone who comes to the concert will be able to recognize at least one or two pieces,” he said. “It’s one of my favorites and some of theirs too.”He said some of the music selected has been difficult for the orchestra. The doors will open at 1:30 with the concert beginning at 2 p.m.“It’s a great opportunity for people to hear real classical music being performed by an orchestra in Beatrice,” Meyer said. On April 28 the orchestra will perform “Love is in the Air” concert featuring the youth scholarship winners.

Men’s Lacrosse Annihilates Hobart, 23-7, in 141st Meeting
10 Cornell (2-1, 0-0 ECAC) racked up the most goals in a single game since 2018 en route to a 23-7 shellacking of Hobart (1-3, 0-0 A10). “It was a big one,” said senior attackman CJ Kirst. Cornell reached the double-digit mark in the second quarter and once again limited Hobart to just one goal in the frame. Ferdousi dodged death from journalist's flat. But poor family of 9-year-old domestic worker has fallen into despair
Ferdousi's tragedy went largely unnoticed by the media, contrasting sharply with the public outcry over the death of Preeti Urang in a similar situation. The 15-year-old girl from a family of tea workers belonging to the Urang community of Moulvibazar fell from senior journalist Ashfaqul’s flat and died on Feb 6. Ashfaqul and his wife Tania Khondoker are accused of culpable homicide, or negligence leading to the death, in the case over Preeti’s death. Ferdousi fell from the flat on Aug 6 last year, five days after she was brought to the house by Shilpi. The family said they would have to spend nearly one third of the money to repay the loans they had borrowed for Ferdousi’s initial treatment.

Gonotontro Moncho ‘attacked police to incite chaos’, says FM Hasan Mahmud
Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud has accused the Gonotontro Moncho leaders of attempting to incite chaos in Bangladesh by attacking police in the name of protests. Members of the alliance of opposition parties gathered outside the National Press Club on Wednesday to protest against rising living cost and irregularities plaguing the banking sector. As they began marching towards the Secretariat, police cracked down on the protesters, according to Saiful Haque, general secretary of the Bangladesh Workers Party. He claimed that around 50 people, including alliance coordinator Zonayed Saki, were hurt in efforts to break through police barricades. Police said the protesters were dispersed when they tried to breach a barrier after an unauthorised gathering.
