A Pakistani woman has issued a public apology after being accused of blasphemy by an angry mob for wearing a dress adorned with Arabic calligraphy. On Sunday, the woman was cornered outside a restaurant in Lahore by a crowd of hundreds, who mistook the Arabic alphabets for verses from the Quran. Police subsequently intervened and escorted the woman to safety, the BBC reports. A key regional leader broke away from India's opposition alliance on Sunday and was set to join hands again with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), in a major blow to Modi's challengers months before general elections. Jahangirnagar University authorities have detained seven people, including two members of a fraud ring and five visually impaired candidates, on charges of giving proxy in the admission test. The alleged members of the fraud ring are Sagar Hossain Rohan, a student of Dhaka College, and a visually impaired student of the university’s 2020-2021 academic year, Mahmudul Hasan Shawon. Indian ghazal maestro and renowned playback singer Pankaj Udhas has died at the age of 72 after a prolonged illness, local media reports citing his family. "With a very heavy heart, we are saddened to inform you of the sad demise of Padma Shri Pankaj Udhas on 26 February due to a prolonged illness," read a statement from the family on his daughter Nayaab Udhas’ Instagram account. Police have detained 23 people linked to a criminal network involved in producing counterfeit national ID cards (NIDs), birth certificates, and passports for members of Myanmar's Rohingya ethnic group seeking refuge in Bangladesh. They also provided NIDs within three days at a cost of Tk 25,000 and passports for Tk 120,000." It is believed that thousands of Rohingya have received fake passports through the operation over the past few years. Another operation carried out by the racket involved identifying individuals in villages who were unlikely to possess passports, said Harunor. Using the names and addresses of these individuals, the gang forged passports for Rohingya or notorious criminals, altering their ages as needed.
