A Buenos Aires federal court condemned four former officers to 25 years imprisonment and acquitted a former sergeant for crimes against humanity committed during Argentina’s latest civic-military dictatorship. The judges also acquitted former military police sergeant Miguel Víctor Pepe, despite the defense having requested life imprisonment for him. The Banco was located in the livestock stealing division of the police of the province of Buenos Aires, in the La Matanza district. The investigations into all three and the previous four trials proved ABO network operated from early 1977 until the first months of 1979. Outside the court, located in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Retiro, members of human rights organizations celebrated the ruling, sheltering from the rain with umbrellas or huddling under gazebos.

At COP28 in Dubai, more than 80 countries are pushing for a broader pact to phase out all CO2-emitting fossil fuels. Opposition to a full fossil fuel phase out, diplomats say, is led by Russia, Saudi Arabia and China, which is the world’s biggest carbon emitter. “To tell Uganda to stop fossil fuels is really, really an insult. “First in, first out — and we will be happy to be the last one to exit from fossil fuels,” she said. The U.N.’s climate science panel — the IPCC –- has said steep fossil fuel cuts are needed to avert more severe climate change.

Peru’s constitutional court ordered the immediate release of former President Alberto Fujimori, who is serving a 25-year sentence for human rights abuses and corruption, according to a court document published on Tuesday. “This Constitutional Court orders the National Penitentiary Institute and the director of the Barbadillo prison to order the immediate release of Alberto Fujimori,” said the court in a ruling released to the media. He received a presidential pardon in 2017, but pressure from the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) repeatedly snarled his attempts to regain freedom. The country’s highest court ruled that an appeal to restore a 2017 pardon for the ailing Fujimori on humanitarian grounds was “founded,” the document said. “The former president is very calm,” Riera said on Tuesday outside the prison holding Fujimori.

Voters in Venezuela rejected the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) jurisdiction over the country’s territorial dispute with Guyana and backed the creation of a new state in the potential oil-rich Esequibo region in a Sunday referendum. The court said in April it had jurisdiction, though a final ruling on the matter could be years away. There was no organized campaign against the referendum and analysts expected voters who opposed it to stay home. He has said the ICJ ruling on Friday prohibits Venezuela from “annexing or trespassing upon Guyanese territory”. Brazil said on Wednesday it had intensified “defensive actions” along its northern border amid the territorial dispute.

Sometimes these translation trouble columns have a theme and sometimes, we have to face machirulos and children of rigor with financial wrists who spit upwards. In English, the literal translation to “spit up” refers to baby puke. From big professional tasks to doing household chores, a child of “rigor” or “severity” will not get things done without nagging, pressure, or some form of impending doom. Although I think journalists in general, as a group of watchdogs constantly on deadline, make for quite the “rigorous” family. Javier Milei will propose deputy-elect Martín Menem to preside over Argentina’s Lower House, the president-elect’s team announced Saturday. In the Lower House, FdT is the first minority with 105 deputies (out of a total of 257), although a new bloc format could take place. However, in an interview with Futurock radio station on Sunday, Argentine President Alberto Fernández suggested that won’t be the case. “We want to sign it because we think that an agreement between the EU and Argentina is correct in geopolitical terms,” the president said. President-elect Javier Milei’s administration is expected to support the deal with the EU, although he has criticized it in the past. “We would be grateful if outgoing president Alberto Fernández could finish the deal between Mercosur and the European Union,” she said. “The outgoing government clearly did not want to give Milei a free pass,” a senior diplomat with knowledge of the negotiations told Reuters.

In a TV interview, Ferraro laid out his vision for financing infrastructure during Milei’s upcoming administration. “Everything the private sector can do, the private sector will do,” he said. Freight trains will be one of their infrastructure priorities, and he used the Vaca Muerta shale oil field as an example.
