Argentina’s trade union federation called for a national strike for January 24 to protest the mega-decree President Javier Milei issued last week. The CGT encompasses nearly two out of three unionized workers in Argentina and has three leaders: Daer (Healthcare Union), Carlos Acuña (Dredging and Signaling Union), and Juan Carlos Schmidt (Valets Union). Two other trade federations, Argentina’s Workers Central and the Autonomous Argentine Workers Central Central, joined the CGT’s call for a national strike. The informal worker’s union (UTEP, by its Spanish initials) will also join the protest. The last time the CGT called for a national strike was in 2019, when they protested against then-President Mauricio Macri’s austerity measures and the record-high debt he had taken out with the International Monetary Fund.

Javier Milei’s “Omnibus” bill requests the termination of the so-called barril criollo (“domestic barrel”) and oil exporting permits. The end of the domestic barrelWhen looking at the price of a liter of gas, it should be noted that refiners buy the oil barrel from oil companies at a cheaper price than the international value. This is known as a “domestic barrel.” Currently, if an oil company exports crude oil, it does so at around US$75–80 per barrel. But if it sells it in the domestic market, the price is about US$60, according to private sector sources. The elimination of the domestic barrel is stated in Article 258, which replaces Article 6 of the hydrocarbon law.

The Economy Ministry obtained AR$500 billion in an auction where it placed an inflation-adjusted peso bond maturing on February 14, 2025. These BONCER bonds have a 4.2% surcharge and an annual nominal rate of -21.7%. Investors placed 471 purchase orders for more than AR$1.5 trillion of the BONCER’s nominal value — three times what the Treasury accepted, AR$500 billion. Last week, the Central Bank board decided that the annual benchmark interest rate would be 100% and determined that the minimum annual interest rate for fixed-term deposits would be 110%, a figure well below the inflation rate. However, he added that CER bonds go up to a point and have become very negative yields in real terms.

President Javier Milei’s presenting a sweeping “omnibus bill” was met with spontaneous protests all over the country on Wednesday night. If approved, the bill would give Milei extraordinary legislative powers for two years and would modify or create hundreds of laws. “Milei’s bill has no precedent,” Sofía, one of the protesters, told news agency Télam, adding that she hoped Congress wouldn’t support it. “It’s terribly authoritarian, it doesn’t respect our conquered rights in the least.”“Omnibus bill = dictatorship,” reads a sign seen during the cacerolazo. The 2024 Argentine football season will start with the Copa de la Liga 2024 on January 27. As with the last tournament, the 28 first-division teams are divided into two 14-team groups (zonas in Spanish). If a team does not have a traditional adversary (think Boca vs. River), it is designated a team within the first division. For this tournament, the groups will be the same as last time around, only reversing the venues in each match. The Fecha de los Clásicos, when teams face traditional rivals, will be played on February 25, the seventh matchday of the tournament.

The Brazilian men’s national football team could miss the next World Cup, FIFA has warned. World football’s governing body is considering excluding the Verdeamarelha from all international competitions following the destitution of Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) president Ednaldo Rodrigues. FIFA sent the CBF a letter with the support of the South American football confederation, Conmebol. Should this happen, Brazil would find itself with many national teams who aren’t part of FIFA and are therefore unable to compete in the World Cup and other official competitions sanctioned by football’s governing body. In 2017, FIFA suspended the Malian Football Federation (FMF) after considering there was “undue interference” by the country’s government.

The General Confederation of Labor (CGT by its Spanish initials) is marching alongside several unions and social movements towards the national courthouse building in Tribunales, downtown Buenos Aires City, to protest the mega-decree announced by President Javier Milei last week. The Popular Economy Workers Union (UTEP), Unidad Piquetera, left-wing parties, social organizations, and other unions — such as Buenos Aires healthcare workers unions — also came out in support. Other lawsuits and protection writs (known as amparo in Spanish) from many quarters have been filed since the mega-decree was revealed. The officers ordered for it to be driven to a bus terminal in Buenos Aires city and then taken away. “We have no money and no food.”You may also be interested in: Long live freedom (but not to protest)

Argentina’s supermarkets and convenience stores will apply a 20% discount to 20 basic basket products for 60 days, starting on Wednesday. Prices have risen steadily since President Javier Milei’s government devalued the peso by 54%, with consulting firm Ecolatina projecting that December inflation will be 25%. A survey by the Herald’s sister publication Ámbito Financiero estimated that prices in supermarkets have increased by 29.5% since the inauguration. He described price controls and regulations — such as the previous government’s Precios Justos (Fair Prices) agreement — as “an aberration.” Milei’s new price agreement program is called Precios Diferenciados (Differentiated Prices). It also includes personal care products such as toilet paper and soap as well as household cleaning products like bleach, paper towels, and detergent.

President Javier Milei terminated state employment contracts of under a year in a decree published on Tuesday. The move, previously outlined in the government’s economic austerity measures, will affect thousands of state workers hired under temporary contracts between January 1st and December 31st, 2023. In Argentina, it is common for some public employees to be hired under temporary contracts, which are often renewed yearly. In another decree, Milei also extended the application of a 2022 decree that freezes national public administration contracts and appointments, which will now be effective until December 2024. The measures apply to national public administration and public entities such as the Federal Administration of Public Income (AFIP in Spanish) and the National Cinema and Audiovisual Arts Institute (INCAA).

Javier Milei said in a television interview on Saturday that tech mogul Elon Musk, the United States government and US companies are “extremely interested in lithium,” seemingly favoring Tesla’s CEO and foreign companies over Argentine provinces in the development of the country’s key strategic resource. “Argentina needs a legal framework that respects the right to property,” Milei said during the dinner show with iconic television host Mirtha Legrand. Lithium carbonate (LCE) is the essential raw material for the batteries of Tesla electric cars, one of Musk’s flagship companies. The relationship between Javier Milei and Elon Musk began when the libertarian began to profile himself as a presidential candidate and started to exchange compliments with the South African-born magnate through his social network X (formerly Twitter). Señor presidente: el litio no es ni de Elon Musk, ni de EEUU, ni de las empresas "interesadas".

Argentina’s 2022 World Cup triumph was a nation-wide effort. This isn’t a new phenomenon in itself, but it took a new dimension during the last World Cup. For example, I worked on Scaloni for a long time, and another group started working on Messi’s leg when we noticed he was in pain. There was some negativity, people who thought we were claiming credit over the World Cup results, but that was never our goal. What happened after the World Cup?
