Sex education is a contentious topic that’s often mired in political controversy, and Argentina is no different. With conservative factions targeting sex ed globally in recent years, Argentina saw a spate of new attacks towards the ESI in 2023 — particularly on the campaign trail of the far-right coalition La Libertad Avanza (LLA). Passed in 2006, the ESI established that sex ed classes should go beyond information on sexual intercourse to tackle topics including emotional regulation and reproductive rights, with subjects evolving as is age-appropriate. “Catholic schools developed an entirely different sex ed curriculum based on that article, with some materials teaching abstinence and that homosexuality is an illness.”Now, the ESI’s most vocal detractors in 2023 hail from LLA. “It gives space to those who were already uncomfortable with the ESI,” Maylans told the Herald, citing certain families protesting that semen had been mentioned in a sixth-grade class as an example.

Milei’s coalition ‘responsible’ for any missing ballots, Electoral Board warns
Buenos Aires City’s National Electoral Board warned the party of far-right presidential candidate Javier Milei that it would be the “sole responsible party” should there be a lack of ballots during the presidential run-off scheduled for Sunday. Government raises official dollar rate to AR$353, returns to ‘crawling peg’
The government moved the official exchange rate on Wednesday for the first time since August 13, when the value was fixed at AR$350 with a 22% currency devaluation. The decisions mean that the currency will depreciate by 3% monthly as of Wednesday, starting at AR$353 (three pesos more than on Tuesday). In its latest Market Expectations Survey (REM, by its Spanish initials) the Central Bank said that consultants expect the official exchange rate to be at AR$526.4 in December — much more than the monthly 3% promised by the government. When markets closed on Wednesday, the blue-chip swap rate had fallen slightly to AR$876 (-0.3%) and the MEP dollar rose by 2.6% to AR$870. According to the Ecolatina consulting firm, the average exchange rate gap is still slightly above 150%.

The tango show that dazzled Taylor Swift’s backup dancers

Argentine energy sector expected to be major contributor of foreign currency in 2024
Economy Minister and Unión por la Patria (UxP) presidential candidate Sergio Massa says that 2024 will be a better year in terms of foreign currency. Brazil's Lula welcomes citizens rescued from Gaza, condemns 'inhumane violence'
Lula greeted passengers with hugs and kisses after their arrival late on Monday evening, offering his support to Brazilians still in or arriving from the Gaza Strip and condemning the killing of civilians in Gaza. “I have never seen such brutal, inhumane violence against innocent people,” Lula said in a short speech on the tarmac. The Gaza Strip has been under bombardment by Israel, which aims to annihilate Hamas, the militant group which runs the Gaza Strip and which attacked Israel from Gaza on October 7, killing around 1,200 people. Gaza medical authorities say more than 11,000 people there have been confirmed killed, with about 40% of them being children. Lula echoed earlier criticisms of both Hamas for its attack against Israel and Israel for its reaction.
