Seven former members of Argentina’s military were convicted of crimes against humanity committed during the country’s last dictatorship (1976-1983) at the Federal Oral Court in Corrientes on Tuesday morning. Also sentenced were former 9th Infantry Regiment officials Abelardo Carlos De la Vega (12 years), and Raúl Horacio Harsich (eight years). According to Argentina’s human rights secretariat, state prosecutors will appeal once the court has published the reasoning behind its judgment . One of the largest was the Corrientes 9th Infantry Regiment, where the crimes took place — all 101 victims named in the case were detained there. The dates of hearings and other information about Argentina’s ongoing human rights trials can be found on the Juicios de Lesa website.

Economy Minister and presidential candidate Sergio Massa said that he will eliminate currency restrictions at the end of 2024 if he wins the November 19 run-off election. The currency restrictions are known in Spanish as the cepo. “We will eliminate the cepo when 2024 ends and we have enough dollar reserves for trade to flow freely, while also not having to strain our reserves,” Massa said. Lifting currency restrictions was one of the main campaign promises of right-wing candidates Javier Milei, who will compete against Massa in the November 19 run-off, and Patricia Bullrich. Currency restrictions have been in place, on and off, for the past decade, through former Presidents Cristina Fernández de Kirchner and Mauricio Macri’s governments.

Pope Francis on Monday skipped reading a prepared speech for a meeting with European rabbis, telling them he was not feeling well, and the Vatican said he was suffering from a slight cold but would go ahead with his other engagements for the day. I greet you all and I welcome you and thank you for this visit, which greatly pleases me,” he told a delegation from the Conference of European Rabbis. “Pope Francis has a bit of a cold and a long day of audiences,” Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said in a statement. “He wanted to greet the European rabbis individually and so he gave them his written speech. In the past, Francis has not read prepared speeches at the last minute in order to preserve his strength.

The Federal Criminal Cassation Court ratified its decision to declare sexual abuse and rape committed during the last military dictatorship as crimes against humanity. Being considered a crime against humanity means that there is no longer a statute of limitations for reporting dictatorship-era sexual abuse and the crimes are considered to be part of a systematic attack against a sector of the civil population. These include crimes against sexual integrity, such as violence against pregnant women and forced pregnancy. The first time a sexual crime was convicted as a crime against humanity was in 2010 in Mar del Plata. One of the officers convicted of sexual crimes against humanity is Jorge “Tigre” Acosta, who recently seemed to back far-right candidate Javier Milei in an open letter written from prison.

From behind-the-scenes conversations at the newsroom to classic translation troubles where the English translation just hits different, here are three words that tickled our linguistic funny bone recently at the Herald. You might not look at corn and dough the same way again. We were discussing these choclos in Spanish in the newsroom and suddenly we thought “Hang on a second, why do we refer to hulking long texts as corn? And maybe next time I see a particularly long quote, I’ll just comment “corn,” professional editor that I am. Share your thoughts and translation hang-ups with us on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram!

Even Milei’s party LLA failed to present any legal complaint and its technical representative, Fernando Cerimedo, told the Herald there had been no fraud. Marcos Schiavi, head of the National Electoral Directorate, told the Herald that LLA authorities never suggested there would be fraud in the numerous meetings they held regarding vote count. A great power but no responsibility“Oh, I saw the videos,” Schiavi told the Herald. “Those were voting stations that weren’t counted during the provisional tally [for any number of reasons],” Schiavi told the Herald. “This was the presidential election with the lowest-ever difference between the provisional and final tallies,” Schiavi told the Herald.

From 10 a.m., hundreds of thousands are taking to the streets as part of the 32nd annual Pride March. While the day’s largest march will be held in Buenos Aires, dozens of cities and municipalities will be celebrating as well. For Argentina’s LGBTQIA+ community, the personal is the political. Argentina’s inaugural pride march took place in 1992, near the height of the HIV epidemic, and was the first of its kind in Latin America. The event was subsequently moved to November 4 to honor Argentina’s first LGBT+ organization, Nuestro Mundo, which was established in November 1967.

Following that, three amparo writs were filed, requesting the suspension of exploratory activities and the revocation of permits. 2 in Mar del Plata granted the requested preliminary measures and ordered the immediate cessation of the project. Four months later, in June of last year, the Federal Court of Appeals in Mar del Plata annulled the preliminary measure and replaced it with another. It also required the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development to be involved in overseeing and enforcing the environmental impact declaration and the environmental management plan. Lamacchia stated that the country could have up to a 50% local component in Mar del Plata offshore, though he emphasized that reaching that level is not easy.

Argentine swifties have been heard. Taylor Swift was declared a guest of honor in Buenos Aires City by the local Legislature during a session held on Thursday. Cortina’s bill called for Swift to be declared a guest of honor because of her positive influence on her Argentine audience, as well as the beneficial economic contribution of her performances to the city. Her three shows, which were completely sold out with 220,000 tickets sold, “will have an impact on jobs and tourism all over Buenos Aires City,” Cortina said. The Buenos Aires City Legislature or mayor can declare someone a guest of honor as a way of recognizing them as an international guest who has made outstanding contributions to culture, science, politics or sports.
