‘Card dollar’ exchange rate rises to almost AR$950 after tax hike
The government has increased the taxes that apply to the dólar tarjeta (card dollar) exchange rate, bringing it to AR$950 to the dollar. The card dollar is the exchange rate applied to purchases made with Argentine credit or debit cards abroad. This means the card dollar will now incur a 155% tax on the value of the official dollar, which closed at AR$375 on Wednesday. Thus, the card dollar is now valued at around AR$950 this Thursday, amid the presidential transition process. That means the card dollar rate will be adjusted in line with that policy.

Milei’s win is not a license to undermine democracy
However, the people have expressed their will at the ballot box, and the democratic process must be respected. Secondly, Milei’s victory is a warning to Argentina’s entire political system, because it shows that an outsider with extreme proposals was better able to channel the popular anger and frustration than career politicians. As in 2001, the entire political system has failed the Argentine people. Winning the run-off is not a carte blanche to run roughshod over Argentina’s democratic consensus. As we said in our collective editorial, a Milei government must provide answers to the population’s demands without breaking the democratic consensus that we have spent 40 years building.

“Argentina has a serious problem with memory,” he tells the Herald following a brief tour of the archive he has named Filmoteca Buenos Aires. Peña is also the film curator at Malba museum and runs a self-managed festival named ‘Bazofi’ (a pun on the Buenos Aires film festival’s acronym, Bafici), where he shows all sorts of rarities from his collection. A state-managed, well-funded facility to preserve, restore, and exhibit the country’s vast film production, which, sadly, is mostly lost forever. Peña’s thorough detective work tracked it down and finally found it, unidentified, in the Buenos Aires Film Museum. The first Argentine film law passed by Congress in 1999 actually declared the country in a state of “film heritage emergency”.

Sex education is a contentious topic that’s often mired in political controversy, and Argentina is no different. With conservative factions targeting sex ed globally in recent years, Argentina saw a spate of new attacks towards the ESI in 2023 — particularly on the campaign trail of the far-right coalition La Libertad Avanza (LLA). Passed in 2006, the ESI established that sex ed classes should go beyond information on sexual intercourse to tackle topics including emotional regulation and reproductive rights, with subjects evolving as is age-appropriate. “Catholic schools developed an entirely different sex ed curriculum based on that article, with some materials teaching abstinence and that homosexuality is an illness.”Now, the ESI’s most vocal detractors in 2023 hail from LLA. “It gives space to those who were already uncomfortable with the ESI,” Maylans told the Herald, citing certain families protesting that semen had been mentioned in a sixth-grade class as an example.
