New S-Class sedan bets on comfortThe new Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedan is pictured during its presentation at the Daimler production plant in Sindelfingen on Wednesday. (Reuters photo)SINDELFINGEN, Germany: Mercedes-Benz engineers are striving to meet every definition of comfort in the new S-Class sedan as they try to steal a march on rival Tesla Inc, which wowed audiences with its "fart mode." "That's along with 'Uebertragungsverhalten', or the seat's ability to absorb bumps in the road, and 'Langstreckenkomfort', or long-range comfort features,'' the vehicle's moustachioed chief engineer Juergen Weissinger told Reuters. It has led the Lastenheft, or engineering blueprint, of the S-Class to expand from a pamphlet into a huge tome. The new S-Class can be ordered in Germany from mid September, and will be in dealerships in December.

The vicious cycle of Bangkok life goes on in the rainy season and many do not even bother to complain to Bangkok governor Aswin Kwanmuang. Appointed by the coup leader's order, Pol Gen Aswin has been in the position for four years. If Pol Gen Aswin came into the governorship through the normal, electoral process, he would have completed his term next month. All things considered, it's about time city people reclaim their right to elect their own governor. An election for Bangkok governor will, however, restore accountability.

World 'falling behind' on goal to cut chronic disease deathsCommuters walk to a train station at rush hour in Bangkok on Aug 20, 2020. LONDON: Only six high-income countries are doing enough to tackle deaths from chronic illnesses such as diabetes and heart disease, a global report said Friday, warning the coronavirus pandemic exposes the urgent need to combat underlying conditions. In its stocktake of global efforts to stop people dying prematurely from largely preventable and treatable non-communicable diseases, the report by groups including the World Health Organization said many countries were falling short. Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) currently kill over 40 million people a year worldwide, making up seven out of ten deaths globally, the report said. Researchers noted that the relationship between non-communicable diseases and severe illness with Covid-19 highlights the "urgent need for governments to implement policies to prevent avoidable deaths from chronic diseases".
