Bid to crack down on fake health care budget claimsThe cabinet has approved a proposal to allow local administration organisations to take over the administration of the health care budget allocated to areas under their jurisdiction and switch to electronic forms of budget disbursement. Local health budget administration was previously the responsibility of a local health security committee. The proposal was made by the National Health Security Office (NHSO), the state committee which handles the universal health care budget. The office is conducting a investigation into at least 18 community health clinics suspected of embezzling health care budgets through false disbursement claims -- thought to be first of reported case of corruption in the universal health care budget that has run for 18 years. Contracts signed with the 18 health clinics had been terminated following the health budget embezzlement scandal.

Locals resist environmental dictatorshipVillagers from Phatthalung opposing the Muang Takua dam stage a rally in front of Government House. "I told myself never to feel discouraged, never to give up on our mission to stop the Muang Takua dam project. Earlier this week, Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha shunned the proposal and declared he would just delay the dam project for another year. The bad news is Ban Muang Takua is not the only place now under threat by environmentally destructive schemes by the government. The drought and poverty that inflicts those communities made the Muang Takua villagers determined never to let it happen to them.

Mr Khomkrit said the Transport Ministry is leaving the matter in the hands of the Finance Ministry because THAI is no longer a state enterprise and therefore is not under its supervision. The airline lost its status as a state enterprise when the Finance Ministry reduced its stake in the airline to below 50%. But because the Finance Ministry owns 49% of shares, it is expected to make the initial move. The Transport Ministry on Tuesday submitted the findings of a probe into alleged irregularities involving Thai Airways International (THAI) to the Finance Ministry for further action. Good news for Muay Thai as ministry lifts barriersNuttadej VachirarattanawongTourism and Sports Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn has given the green light to Muay Thai fights to be held around the country and in any kind of venues, a boxing promoter said on Tuesday. "It's good news although I haven't seen the official document yet," said Nuttadej Vachirarattanawong, managing director of Petchyindee Muay Thai Academy. On Monday, Nuttadej led a protest by scores of people in Muay Thai, who included promoters, gym owners and boxers, outside the Tourism and Sports Ministry. The government's Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) had allowed Muay Thai fights to be organised at standard stadiums with a limited number of spectators. "We only want opportunities to stage Muay Thai events," Nuttadej said yesterday.

30-baht health scheme needs a tonicActivists call for a review of the 30-baht health scheme and for improved service. JAKKRAPAN NATHANRIWhen I heard Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul say he would make it possible for members of the Universal Health Care (UC) scheme, better known as the "30 baht scheme", to get treatment anywhere, I was optimistic. I've always appreciated how the government has maintained the UC scheme for Thais, even though our leaders don't understand the principle. I believe health personnel deserve credit for a scheme which has gained recognition all over the world ... but there's still room for improvement. It's time they thought about solutions for those registering for the UC scheme today, so that they can get the treatment they need nearby.

Wean farmers off chemicalsThe Prayut Chan-o-cha government must prevent attempts by the Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives Ministry to revoke the ban on farmers using extremely toxic substances on their crops. Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul hosted a press conference to denounce Mr Chalermchai's decision to ask the committee to consider lifting the chemicals ban. After the heavy dependence on these chemicals to grow food, it won't be easy for local farmers to opt for safer cultivation methods. Soft loans, weed-controlling farm machinery that does not use toxic chemicals and educational campaigns that would free farmers from chemicals are among the steps that need to be taken. The Agriculture Ministry has done little to wean farmers off these substances and that's a shameful dereliction of duty.

Is justice coming back to bite the Prayut regime? When Gen Prayut wanted to be considered for the premiership, a dispute arose. In 2019, the court ruled that Gen Prayut in his capacity as head of the NCPO was not a state official. Under this interpretation, Gen Prayut was qualified to serve as premier. It also installed a fully appointed Senate, selected by Gen Prayut the NCPO's chief which would proceed to vote for Gen Prayut as the PM candidate.
