The motion was previously co-signed by the MFP MPs, 16 Democrats and several MPs from other coalition parties. As well as the Democrats, MPs from other coalition parties who earlier backed the motion also pulled out. They were Surathin Pijarn of the New Democracy Party, Julapan Nonsrichai of the Chartthaipattana Party, Maj Gen Songkrod Thipsrat of the Palang Chart Thai Party, Thai Civilized Party leader Mongkolkit Suksintharanon, the Prachathamthai Party leader Pichet Sathiratchawal and the Thai Rak Tham Party leader Pirawit Ruengluedpak. The Pheu Thai Party, in the meantime, is tabling its charter-changing motion similarly seeking a substantially less powerful Senate today. The main opposition party has invited the MFP to co-sponsor its motion if the MFP's own motion does not go through.

Charoen Krung is one of the oldest parts of the city and is the first road that was built when Bangkok expanded to this side of the city. As land prices in the city have skyrocketed in the past few decades, small shops have been replaced with chic cafes and restaurants, malls and high-rise condos. To me, government and city policymakers care more about maximising land use, without considering how the residents will really live in it. The city administrators reclaim public space from street food vendors, without seeing the real function and making it a tourist attraction. We used to have all sorts of small businesses by local operators, from small shops selling simple yet tasty noodles to mom-and-pop shops, from stationery shops to hardware stores.

(Reuters photo)Thailand's economy is expected to contract between 7% and 9% this year from the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, while frequent anti-government protests are a concern, a group of top business associations said on Wednesday. "The economy is still very weak," Payong Srivanich, chairman of the Thai Bankers' Association, told a briefing. The number of visitors from overseas is expected at only 6.7 million this year after last year's record 39.8 million, according to the state planning agency. If it goes much further, it will affect the economy... foreign investors have already slowed their investment," he said.

Fanaticism, hate speech and BuddhismThe Thai Pakdee (Loyal Thai) group meets on Aug 30 at the Thai-Japan Bangkok Youth Centre with students participating in support of the monarchy. Sadly, what happened is the state making Thai Buddhism into an autocratic and misogynistic system, turning its back on the Buddha's teachings in its pursuit of wealth and power. Religious tolerance gives way to a quest for supremacy, resulting in the Sangha's implicit support for state violence against other faiths. Equally distressing, state authorities are using tax money to spread falsehood and hate speech through their information operations. State orchestration of hate speech on social media violates Right Speech at every level.

Cash handout raises concernBoosting the economy is the unavoidable task facing all governments coping with the global recession caused by Covid-19. In its current shape, the 45-billion-baht cash handout remains unclear, with some aspects of the measure questionable. One thing that the Finance Ministry emphasised about the scheme is that it is not just free cash handouts. At present, CAESAC insists the 3,000-baht cash handouts will be further modified. With the many questions the measure has provoked, the Finance Ministry faces a tough job redefining its objectives.
