US expert panel votes 'no' on experimental Alzheimer's drugMaker Biogen was hopeful its drug aducanumab would be the first ever approved to treat the cognitive decline associated with Alzheimer's -- a major medical milestoneWASHINGTON - A US government-convened expert committee on Friday voted against recommending the approval of the first new Alzheimer's drug in almost two decades after finding insufficient evidence of its benefit. Maker Biogen was hopeful its drug aducanumab would be the first ever approved to treat the cognitive decline associated with Alzheimer's -- a major medical milestone. It would also have been the first drug approved against the disease since 2003. Aducanumab is a monoclonal antibody that targets the build-up of a protein called beta-amyloid in the brain tissue of Alzheimer's patients. One theory holds that Alzheimer's disease comes about from an excessive accumulation of these proteins in some people's brains as they age and their immune systems decline.

Through collaboration with state telecom enterprise TOT, mu Space succeeded in launching server payload into space with Blue Origin's rocket from Texas, in the US, on Oct 13. The company also has links with its US-registered space manufacturing firm, mu Space LLC. Money raised will be used to build a medium-sized smart factory to develop space technology, including satellites, automation systems and robots. In 2018, mu Space made great strides by sending its first payload from Asia on New Shepard space vehicle. "With 1,000 employees, they would be in charge of 3,000 robots," said Mr James.

Retiring older power plants mulledEnergy authorities are planning to study the possibility of adopting an "early retirement" for ageing power plants that cannot efficiently supply power to the state grid in a bid to resolve the oversupply of national power reserves, says Kawin Thangsupanich, secretary to the energy minister. The idea is among proposals raised to revise the national power development plan (PDP) for 2018-37. The higher a power reserve's capacity, the more tariff is charged on power bills, creating a heftier burden for households. Opportunities for new power plants with better technologies will also be available to policymakers. Oversupply of the national power reserve is a big headache for authorities because several domestic gas-fired power plant projects and hydropower plant development projects in Laos are in the pipeline, with operation dates scheduled until 2025, said Mr Kawin.

Light at end of tunnel for unity panel? But there are signs that those opposed to it may get back to the negotiating table, signalling light at the end of the tunnel. Mr Abhisit is known for his anti-military and charter rewrite stance since he led the Democrat Party into the 2019 election. There have been nearly 10 committees, at parliamentary and national levels, from the Abhisit, Yingluck (Shinawatra) and Prayut governments. During the coup era, a number of reconciliation panels were formed.

Target the PM2.5 sourceDecember is known for being the beginning of the PM2.5 season in Bangkok and several other provinces. To do so, the government must have the right information about the causes of air pollution first and foremost. It is factories, power plants and mass cultivation that drive farmers to burn farm waste and cause transboundary air pollution. Without knowing the correct target, we cannot solve the smog issue at its source. What the government needs is moral courage and to act like a policymaker -- not a dust-buster nor cleaner -- to address PM2.5 at its source.

We've gone through a soft lockdown and we're past it, but the pandemic continues and things are far from normal. Spend 30 minutes here to destroy things with a bat, hammer or crowbar. What matters is that you finally get to destroy a room without going to jail for it. THROW SOME AXES(Photos: Rage Room Sriangkarin Via Facebook)Nothing takes the stress off like a little bit of axe-throwing. Plus, it doesn't hurt that you've also got plenty of food and drink stalls around — just don't drink and throw.

The 'easy' way out for PMThe Constitutional Court's ruling on Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha occupying an army residence, scheduled for Dec 2, could ease him gently from power, said Jatuporn Prompan, chairman of the red-shirt United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD). He was responding to the court's pending ruling in a case lodged by the opposition in November last year. The opposition said Gen Prayut's tenancy of the army house was a conflict of interest and took the case to court. Speaking in a live broadcast on the Peace Talk programme via Facebook, Mr Jatuporn said if Gen Prayut was disqualified as prime minister by court order, it could provide him with a gentle way out of his current political predicament. Gen Prayut has come under pressure from anti-government protesters to step down.

Thailand: The Land of... I'm sure, I'm not the only one who has been rethinking Thailand's nickname The Land Of Smiles. Fun fact: The Land Of Smiles is also the title of a German operetta, which premiered in 1929. National Science Day is on August 18 but every day in Thailand is Superstition Day. The Land of Two DictionariesReform means reform to some but it also means abolition to others.
