Build affordable options for the country's elderlyAt first glance, I thought the latest elderly care facility, the Senior Complex Project initiated by the Treasury Department and Ramathibodi Hospital, would be an ideal facility for Thailand's ageing society. It will be in line with the government's response to Thailand's ageing society and will have facilities and medical services from a nearby hospital. But the price, at 1.83 million baht plus a monthly 30,000 baht fee, is not so friendly. But, at those prices, it can cater to only a small portion of Thailand's ageing population. The remainder of the elderly population, which accounts for a significant amount of Thailand's overall population -- what will they do?

Ill omens for reconciliationShenanigans involving a group of MPs and senators signing a motion to ask parliament to seek a Constitutional Court ruling on rewriting the charter bode ill for the reconciliation process. What is going on indicates that Gen Prayut and his government do not really care about reconciliation. What he must do now is to make the MPs and senators withdraw their motion. There is still a chance for those MPs and senators to behave with decency and withdraw the motion when it is tabled to parliament. They must know that hypocrisy and political trickery will do no good for the country at a time when all efforts are needed to achieve reconciliation.

New democracy demands unleashedMillions of Myanmar voters went to the polls last Sunday to voice their overwhelming support for democracy and their opposition to the military's involvement in politics. The outcome was predictable: the governing National League for Democracy (NLD) led by their iconic leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, was returned to power, but with an even greater majority in parliament than their landslide victory five years ago. And while a handful of ethnic political parties did win seats, it was not as many as was expected. "So we voted NLD because there is currently no other party better than this to ensure human rights and strengthen democracy," she told the Bangkok Post. Ethnic-based political parties did draw votes away in some areas, especially in Karenni, Mon, Rakhine and Shan states.

The ban was in response to media reports and photos taken of individuals in saffron robes who participated in anti-government rallies. A group of them were pictured holding placards demanding the right to vote, as monks are barred from voting. Others were reportedly questioning why they must obey the rule which requires them to shave their eyebrows. The National Office of Buddhism (NOB) has issued an order barring monks and novices from joining mass protests, its director Narong Songarom said. Anti-government protesters march to the Grand Palace before they agreed with police to end the rally at Sanam Luang on Sunday. (Photo by Varuth Hirunyatheb)Arnon Nampa, who plays a key role in the anti-government protests, has urged guards of demonstrators to stick to a peaceful approach, saying this will help the movement achieve success. On his Facebook account, Mr Arnon said that he received this advice from "an aunt next door" while discussing politics over dinner in Chiang Mai. "She said if guards on the front line stick to a peaceful approach, we will win," Mr Arnon said. On the contrary, if guards remain calm and use peaceful means, we will win," Mr Arnon said.

Planes, dry ice, pharmacies: logistical challenges of Covid-19 vaccinesFilling and packaging tests for the large-scale production and supply of AstraZeneca’s Covid-19 vaccine candidate are pictured in September 2020 in Anagni Italy. Thermal shipping containers will each be filled with dry ice and 975 vials of the vaccine which each contain five doses, for a total of 4,875 doses. But the vaccine would not be suitable for distribution at doctors' offices or pharmacies, which are too small, she warned. The vaccines can remain in their boxes for two weeks meaning hospitals will not need a special freezer. The European Union meanwhile has ordered 200 million, Japan 120 million, Britain 30 million and Canada 20 million.

Pfizer breakthrough boosts Thai projectThailand stands to gain from an information-sharing agreement with Pfizer/BioNTech after preliminary results showing its latest Covid-19 vaccine candidate is 90% effective made headlines around the world on Monday. In the Asia-Pacific region, only three countries have supply deals already in place with Pfizer. Dr Nakhon, nevertheless expects researchers in Thailand will benefit as the NVI/Chulalongkorn "mRNA-based vaccine" is similar to Pfizer/BioNTech's. Dr Nakhon said Thai researchers are looking forward to finding out more about the proteins and the processes implemented by Pfizer/BioNTech to recognise them. The world cheered on Monday when Pfizer Inc announced its vaccine, jointly developed with BioNTech SE, was more than 90% effective based on initial trial results.

Road accidents biggest health crisisIf we go by the number of deaths, the coronavirus is not the country's biggest health public health problem. About 20,000 people die in road accidents each year, or about 56 deaths a day. From the 833 cases in our study, we have found that the main cause of road accidents involves road factors such as road safety equipment, road slopes, warning signs and road signs. The Department of Disease Control has spearheaded change by developing a more integrated database system on road accidents. It will reveal the causes of car accidents in full, enabling policymakers to hit the right targets and effectively reduce road accidents and casualties.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha on Tuesday welcomed a golf quarantine proposal as an alternative local state quarantine (ALSQ) option, describing it as an "interesting idea" although it has yet to be approved by the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA). Gen Prayut brushed aside concerns that the proposal might involve a conflict of interest as some golf courses maintain ties with cabinet ministers and government politicians. The prime minister said the scheme was proposed as many golf courses are equipped with hotels and are also isolated from the public. There are 238 golf courses with 5,000 rooms nationwide, and the Sports and Tourism Ministry hopes 20-30 will join the scheme. Many Thai workers left their vehicles in Malaysia when they returned home before the border closure in early April.
