The American government, through the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), has also improved access to HIV treatment across Nigeria. Our key partnerships with the national and state governments, UNAIDS and Global Fund were instrumental in determining what systems and strategy we needed to gain traction and outpace. Also speaking, UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mathias Schmale, commended Nigeria’s strong leadership and commitment to the fight against several pandemics, including HIV and COVID-19. Schmale observed that the New Dawn publication chronicles more than 150 people who contributed, fought or experienced evolution of the response and also depicts the role played by the government and various key stakeholders, including development partners, people living with HIV, civil society and private sector. Director General, National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), Dr. Sani Aliyu, said the publication confirms what could be achieved, “when we come together.”

NUPENG Warns Of Adulterated Engine Oil In Circulation
Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has alerted Nigerians of adulterated engine oil in circulation and has agreed to work with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to tame the perpetrators. Earlier, the state commandant of NSCDC, Waziri Goni explained that Umar was arrested last week in Tumfure in Akko local government while selling the fake product to a vigilant NSCDC staff. “It was one of our staff who ran short of engine oil and needed to top it that approached him (Umar) it was when he saw that it was light that he smelled it and discovered that it smelt like kerosene,” Goni said. It was the query that alerted unsuspecting motorists who then drove off.”Goni told journalists that his Command was ready to join NUPENG and other stakeholders to rid the state of bad elements in disguise. Meanwhile, Umar admitted that he was working with one Habib Ibrahim based in Kano who has for over a year been supplying him the product.

Unease in APC over Tinubu’s running mate
By press time, the name of a former governor of Bornu State, Kashim Shettima resonated among possible choices as Tinubu’s running mate. Thus, we feel it would be rational for a northern Christian, especially from the marginalized North-Central geo-political zone to be a running mate. Sani opined that the former Speaker, House of Representatives, Honourable Yakubu Dogara fits the bill to be Tinubu’s running mate. Also, a group of APC stakeholders, led by Aliu Adamu has asked leadership of the party and APC Northern governors to shelve the idea of a Muslim-Muslim ticket. It asked the party to surrender itself to ensuring that the running mate to its standard-bearer is a Christian.

How helicopter shelled Southern Kaduna villages, by survivors
Survivors of Fulani herders’ attack on Adara villages in Kajuru Local Council in Southern Kaduna have narrated how a helicopter shelled their villages, while they were fighting the invaders. They narrated their ordeal when they visited the President of Southern Kaduna Peoples Union (SOKAPU), Jonathan Asake, at the union’s national secretariat in Kaduna. But since the villagers were already undercover, they had an upper hand and the killer herdsmen started retreating, The Guardian learnt. “Eventually, we saw a helicopter coming towards Maikori, and we were happy that help had come,” Sani said. Other villages that were attacked earlier that day by the same killers are Sabon Gida, Unguwan Sarki and Dogon Noma.”

World Bank approves $474m loan to S.Africa for COVID vaccines
The World Bank has approved a loan of 454.4 million euros ($474.4 million) to help South Africa fund COVID-19 vaccine purchases, the bank and South Africa’s National Treasury said in a statement. South Africa has recorded the most coronavirus cases and deaths on the African continent, with over 3.9 million confirmed cases and more than 101,000 deaths. It initially struggled to secure vaccines due to limited supplies and protracted negotiations, but it is now well-supplied with doses. “This project will retroactively finance the procurement of 47 million COVID-19 vaccine doses by the GoSA (Government of South Africa),” the statement said. Vigilantes torture Anambra youth to death, two suspects detained
A 22-year-old man, Osondu Ezemmaduchukwu, has been allegedly tortured to death by vigilantes at Ifite Nanka village, in the Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State. His elder brother, Ebere, while narrating the incident to our correspondent on Monday, said Osondu was arrested together with his immediate elder brother, Robinson, and other suspects. He noted that they were all locked up at the Ifite Village Hall for over nine days. He noted that the suspects were locked up in the vigilantes’ hall because the police told the group that they were no longer accepting or remanding suspects because of the security situation in the state. The state police spokesman, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident, adding that two of the vigilantes were in custody.

Youth group seeks Atiku's intervention in Kano PDP crisis
A political youth group has called on the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, to intervene in the internal crisis threatening the Kano State chapter of the party. The group, PDP Youth in Action, made the appeal in a letter jointly signed by its leaders across the 44 local government areas of Kano State, addressed to the PDP National Chairman, Sen. Iyorchia Ayu, in Abuja. The acknowledged copy of the letter that was also copied to the PDP Vice National Chairman, Northwest, and the INEC, was made available to The PUNCH in Kano. They said it was saddening that the Kano PDP was yet to put its house in order when most parts of the country were rooting for PDP as a solution. They recalled that PDP in Kano state held two parallel congresses with one conducted by Shehu Wada Sagagi, a person said to be the Chairman of the PDP in the state and recognised by a law court that produced Muhammad Abacha.

Benue attack: Death toll rises to 15, many displaced
Many people have been reportedly displaced after suspected herders attacked Igama community, in the Okpokwu Local Government Area of Benue State. PUNCH Metro gathered that the death toll of the attack climbed to 15 on Monday. Our correspondent had reported that suspected herders invaded the community in the early hours of Sunday. The council Chairman, Amina Audu, had said nine corpses were recovered from the community. The state police spokesperson, SP Catherine Anene, said she had yet to get details of the attack.

The Police Training School (PTS) Ikeja, on Monday graduated six PhD holders and 169 others, from different professions, into several ranks of the Nigerian Police Force as supernumeraries (Spies). The six PhD holders promoted into the cadre of CSP are Dr Peter Akhideno, Dr Elvis Otobo, Dr Kehinde Oduns, Dr Glory Raphael, Dr Goodluck Enimakpokpo and Dr Adaramewa Olusuyi. Russia too is saying, “Hey Guys, to hell with your petrodollar, with or without you, Europe, I, Russia, will survive.
