The Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority (NEPZA) has described its newly inaugurated Special Economic Zone Security (SEZSEC) outfit as the best move to further attract investments to the free zone areas. It is also expected to create a safe and secure environment for the zones’ employees, facilities, contracted service providers, members of the public, the special economic zones and NEPZA resources. The Guardian gathered that the outfit was borne out of the need to further strengthen existing security architecture and provide adequate security to lives and properties in the free zones. In his remarks, the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Niyi Adebayo, said the decision to create the body was apt in order to secure and keep the special economic zones (SEZ) safe and give confidence to investors. Ali, who was represented by Catherine Ekekezie, Deputy Comptroller-General in-charge of Excise, Free Trade Zones and Industrial Incentives Department, cautioned the personnel against going on a “one-man patrol” to avoid running into trouble.

The European Union on Monday added three Al-Qaeda-linked jihadist commanders in West Africa to its terrorist sanctions blacklist for attacks in Mali and Burkina Faso. The new asset freezes and visa bans target Sidan Ag-Hitta and Salem ould Breihmatt, senior commanders within the UN-listed Al-Qaeda-affiliated Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam Wal-Muslimin (JNIM) in Mali, as well as its Burkinabe branch Ansarul Islam and its leader Jafar Dicko. “The sanctioned group and individuals are responsible for several terrorist attacks, including against civilians, the UN peacekeeping mission in Mali and defence and security forces in Burkina Faso,” the EU said. “Their activities contribute to the expansion of the terrorist threat in Western Africa and therefore pose a serious and continued threat to the EU and to regional and international stability.”The move takes to 13 people and four groups the number of targets now on the EU’s blacklist against Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group.

“I lost my 16-year-old daughter in the attack shot by a bullet from the (OLA) gunmen,” one Amhara man said, adding that the rebels had blocked the main highway. “The Abiy regime is again blaming the OLA for atrocities committed by its own retreating fighters,” he said on Twitter. The EHRC, a state-affiliated independent rights body, said in a statement that security forces had carried out “door-to-door executions” in Gambella, which borders Oromia. The OLA last year forged an alliance with the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), which has been locked in conflict with federal forces in northern Ethiopia since November 2020. Ethiopia’s government declared a “humanitarian truce” in March, allowing limited supplies of international aid into Tigray for the first time since mid-December.

A non-Governmental organisation, the Coalition for Biodiversity Conservationists of Nigeria (CBCN), has called for concerted efforts to save the world’s fast-depleting biodiversity. The unintentional transport of plants and animals to new regions is threatening the world’s ecosystems’ biodiversity, structure and function. The threats posed to biodiversity by invasive species are considered second only to habitat loss. Mwansat, who spoke on ‘Escalating Anthropogens on Biodiversity Conservation: Past, present, and future’ said human activities are eroding biodiversity, adding that some species are extinct already, and up to one million other species are threatened with extinction. Others are Dr Clement Ebin, Chairman, CBCN Board of Trustees and Prof. Ahmad Sanda of Usmanu Dan Fodio University, Sokoto state.

Since then I have been an active politician till today; I was a political adviser to the then Vice President, Atiku Abubakar. I later became the pioneer National Auditor of Action Congress and also served as Deputy National Auditor of the Peoples Democratic Party. How did you emerge as the senatorial candidate of the Yobe North senatorial district of the APC? Who do you think Tinubu as President would have preferred to be in the Senate between you and Lawan? How can he allow his name to be submitted to INEC when he knew that he didn’t participate in the senatorial primary?

This Emi l’okan singsong will appear to fall flat in the face of the popular desire to re-affirm the culture of the people undeniably anchored on cherished values. Tinubu has conveniently substituted igbo l’okan for a personal self-seeking Emi ‘lokan bogey. Perhaps we must all begin to cultivate a sense of entitlement regarding issues or policies that are incidents of our citizenship. An Emi l’okan bogey has appeared on the horizon threatening an orderly panoply and frightening men of moderate means out of the way or out of contention. Igbo l’okan as a deep-seated conviction for order and fairness has been cavalierly substituted for Emi l’okan without compunction.
