A former Secretary of the Nigeria Football Federation, Sani Toro; former Assistant Coach of the Nigeria Super Eagles, Garba Yila; and one of their friends, Alhaji Isa Jah have been kidnapped. They were said to have left Abuja at about some minutes past 5.00pm and were reportedly kidnapped at about 7.30pm. “Yes, it is true that he (Isa Toro) was driving with two of his friends when they were kidnapped yesterday (Saturday). A family friend and neighbour of Toro, Mallam Ardo Hazzad, also confirmed the incident to our correspondent. I got across to one of his sons who told me he was kidnapped around Akwanga road in Nasarawa while returning from Abuja.

The party had constituted a Vice Presidential Candidate Screening Committee that screened Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, after his nomination as the running mate to the standard bearer of the party. It stated that the members of the committee is to be headed by Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo, while Dr. Akilu Indabawa is the Secretary to the committee and Mr Sunday Omobo, the Administrative Secretary. Nottingham Forest have opened talks to sign the Union Berlin striker Taiwo Awoniyi, who has a release clause in the region of €20m (£17.2m). During his time on the books at Anfield, Awoniyi had seven loan spells, at clubs in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands, before joining Union Berlin in a permanent deal in 2021. Awoniyi scored 15 Bundesliga goals last season to help Union Berlin to a fifth-place finish. The pair played alongside one another in the 2019-20 season when the Awoniyi was on loan there. In other news, Forest are still in talks with Manchester United over securing the loan signing of the goalkeeper Dean Henderson and are hopeful of concluding a deal.

As the 2023 general elections draw closer, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has warned against the use of provocative, strong and derogatory speeches by politicians and their supporters. The Executive Secretary of the Commission, Tony Ojukwu (SAN), who was speaking at the commemoration of the International Day for Countering Hate Speech at the weekend in Abuja said hate speech promotes prejudice, undermines social cohesion and constitutes a threat to national security. Ojukwu, who lamented that the frequent use of hate speeches in Nigeria, has a devastating effect on sustainable peace, national cohesion, the dignity of the human person, peace and development in the country, said, the 2023 general elections present another opportunity to further deepen democracy and the protection of human rights. In a message to the occasion, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, Matthias Schmale, observed that new technologies of communication have amplified the scale and impact of hate speech. He said social media and the internet are presently the most frequent methods for spreading divisive rhetoric and ideologies on a global scale and added that the UN promotes tolerance in countering hate speech, in line with the 2021 UN General Assembly resolution on the promotion of inter-religious and inter-cultural and tolerance in countering hate speech.

Mr Biodun Oyebanji, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has been declared the winner of Saturday’s Ekiti governorship election. Declaring the winner, Prof. Oyebode Adebowale, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) returning officer, said Oyebanji polled a total of 187, 057 to win the election. “That I, Prof. Oyebode Adebowale, hereby certified that I am the returning officer of the Ekiti 2022 Governorship Election held on June 18. Also, the Action Democratic Party (ADP) scored 5,597; Allied Peoples Movement (APM) -290; Labour Party (LP) polled 195 votes; New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) scored 529 and National Rescue Movement (NRM) 347. The rest were, Young Progressives Party (YPP)-618; All Peoples Party (APP) polled 1,980 and Zenith Labour Party,(ZLP) polled 282; Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) polled 856.

The Independent National Electoral Commission has declared the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Biodun Oyebanji, the winner of the Ekiti State governorship election. The Returning Officer for the election, Prof Kayode Adebowale, who is the Vice Chancellor, the University of Ibadan, announced the results. Out of the 360,753 votes cast, the total valid votes in the election were 351,865. Similarly, in Ikogosi-Ekiti, Ekiti West Local Government Area, where Oyebanji hails from, residents also began celebrating the victory of their kinsman at the poll. In different parts of the state also, some members of the ruling party celebrated the victory, describing it as well-deserved.

The IITA GoSeed, a private seed company of the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), says it has made significant progress in 2021 with the sales of improved cassava planting materials averaged $267,277 despite COVID-19 restrictions. The Vegetative Seed Specialist of IITA GoSeed, Dr. Mercy Diebiru-Ojo, said the sales were achieved despite COVID-19 restrictions that hurt seed supply chains. IITA GoSeed is closely linked with breeding programmes in IITA. In collaboration with the National Agricultural Seed Council (NASC), the company ensures that materials going to Cassava Seed Entrepreneurs (CSEs) are disease-free and of high genetic potential. The success of IITA GoSeed attracted other related projects such as the GIZ-GIAE/IITA Cassava & Maize Value Chain Project (funded by GIZ) and other interventions to the cassava seed system.
