Mohammed Kudus scored twice, including the go-ahead goal after South Korea evened the match in the second half, and Ghana staved off elimination at the World Cup. Down 2-0, Cho Geu-sung scored both of South Korea’s goals about three minutes apart early in the second half to even the game at 2-2. Ghana denied the Super Eagles the World Cup ticket after edging their arch-rivals 1-1 on aggregate on the away-goal rule last March.

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors has said the number of medical doctors in the country decreases daily, adding that only about 10,000 resident doctors are left. He said, “I know that as of now, we have just about 24,000 doctors, including the consultants, resident doctors, house officers, and medical officers. “The resident doctors used to be 16,000 but currently, we are doing around 9,000 to 10,000. Malawi has arrested its Vice President Saulos Chilima and charged him with graft over a bribery scandal involving a British-Malawian businessman, the country’s anti-corruption watchdog said. The president’s deputy – who has been stripped of his powers – has been charged with several counts of corruption and taking bribes to influence government contracts, the Anti-Corruption Bureau said. President Lazarus Chakwera stripped Chilima of his powers in June when details of the alleged graft first emerged. According to Malawi’s constitution, the president could not suspend or remove Chilima because he was an elected official. Chilima partnered with Chakwera to win the 2020 presidential election re-run, sweeping to victory on an anti-corruption platform.

Malaysia’s perennial opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim was named prime minister on Thursday, ending the political impasse after inconclusive election results. The 75-year-old was scheduled to be sworn in at 5 pm (0900 GMT), becoming the country’s fourth leader in years. “After taking into consideration the views of Their Royal Highnesses the Malay Rulers, His Majesty has given consent to appoint Anwar Ibrahim as the 10th Prime Minister of Malaysia,” read a statement from the palace of the king, Sultan Abdullah Ahmad Shah. In the capital Kuala Lumpur, Anwar supporters were in celebratory mood. The king had summoned Anwar and former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin – whose Perikatan Nasional bloc got 73 seats – in an attempt to break the deadlock.

Multinational information technology company, Hewlett-Packard, has announced plans to lay off about 4000-6000 workers globally within the space of two years. In a press release shared via the company website on Tuesday, the computer manufacturing firm stated that the lay-offs were part of its “Future Ready Transformation Plan,” to save costs and ensure “portfolio optimisation and operational efficiency”. The transformation plan is expected to run its course till the end of 2025 fiscal year. The statement read in part, “Today, HP Inc. announced a fiscal year 2023 Future Ready Transformation plan, driving significant structural cost savings through digital transformation, portfolio optimization and operational efficiency. These actions are expected to be completed by the end of fiscal 2025.”The company’s announcement comes amid a slew of employee cuts in the global tech industry.

An Ikeja Domestic Violence and Sexual Offences Court on Wednesday sentenced one Adewale Ibitoye to life imprisonment for having sexual intercourse with his 14-year-old daughter. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Justice Abiola Soladoye also sentenced Ibitoye’s friend, Moses Okrukpe, to life imprisonment for defiling and impregnating the survivor at 14. Soladoye held that the prosecution had convincingly proved the charge of defilement against the convicts. She condemned the barbaric act of the first defendant for having sex with his underage daughter several times before passing her to his friend for a pseudo marriage, over a bottle of gin. “She said that the second defendant had sexual intercourse with her which led to pregnancy and the first defendant in his testimony, confirmed that he collected a bottle of gin from his friend as wedding rights.

A yet-to-be-identified nursing mother has committed suicide, abandoning her child in a bush where her corpse was discovered along Suuka Airport road, in the Federal Capital Territory. PUNCH Metro gathered that an empty bottle of insecticide was found beside her corpse in the bush on Monday. Nnaji said, “The corpse of a middle-aged woman was seen in a bush in our area on Monday evening. We got there and found an empty bottle of insecticide by her side; her body smelt of the insecticide. The corpse has been deposited at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital morgue.
