Peace marches organised by the Catholic Church took place across the DR Congo Sunday to protest violence in the country’s east, days after an alleged massacre of civilians. Protesters chanted slogans such as “No to the international community’s hypocrisy” and “No to the Balkanisation of DR Congo” at rallies in the capital Kinshasa and other towns. The March 23 movement, or M23, is a predominantly Congolese Tutsi rebel group that was dormant for years. It took up arms again in November last year and seized the town of Bunagana on the border with Uganda in June. The DR Congo army, in its accusations on Thursday, also said the M23 had breached the ceasefire with government troops, a charge that the group also denied.

Southerners shunning polygamy contributing to prostitution -Ned Nwoko
Prince Ned Nwoko, the husband of actress, Regina Daniels, has blamed southern Nigerian men, who shun polygamy for contributing to prostitution in society. Nwoko, who is seeking the senatorial seat for the Delta North in the 2023 poll said this in an interview with Guardian Nigeria on Saturday. He said, “Many women are out there on their own without husbands, especially in the southern part of the country, and there is a high level of prostitution. So, the Ooni and I have that kind of common background, because our grandfathers were kings and served Nigeria in that capacity. And we are now also serving Nigeria by having many wives (laughter).”

Data protection: FG extends compliance deadline to January
The Federal Government has extended the deadline earlier set, requiring organisations to comply with the provisions of the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation 2019. The National Commissioner, Nigeria Data Protection Bureau, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, who made this known on Thursday in Abuja, explained that the approved extension of time was for data controllers and data processors to comply with the earlier notice on National Data Protection Adequacy Programme Whitelist. “The measures to be taken by each MDA for the purpose of data protection and accountability shall include but not limited to the following:“Designation or appointment of a suitable officer within the MDA as a Data Protection Officer. “Development of a Data Protection Policy in line with Nigeria Data Protection Regulation and other applicable regulatory instruments on data privacy and protection. “Forwarding of the contact details of the data protection officer to the Office of the Head of Service and the Nigeria Data Protection Bureau.

The Guardian Reporter, Musa, Receives CAMA Award
The Guardian reporter, Waliat Musa, has received the Cleft Awareness Media Award (CAMA) Nigeria, 2022, as the second runner-up among a pool of journalists across the 36 states of the country. The award is in recognition of her passion and commitment to advocating the cause of persons with disabilities, especially, people living with cleft lip and palate in Nigeria. Other recipients of the award are Gyang Musa of Daily Sun Newspaper (winner) and Adenike Adebowale of Premium Times (first runner-up). She added: “Smile Train organised the CAMA Awards as a way to encourage journalists for their selfless services in creating awareness about cleft. The Shame Of Buhari’s Foreign Medical Trips – Guardian Editorial
The frequent foreign medical trips of Buhari are not only unprecedented but also demonstrate his disinterest in improving the healthcare system of Nigeria. His preference for foreign, rather than local, treatment is unpatriotic and has exposed Nigeria to ridicule among the community of nations. It paints a poor picture of the country’s healthcare sector and casts doubt on the competence of local medical professionals before the world. Buhari’s foreign trips expose the hypocrisy of an administration that purports to promote local content by banning the importation of certain foreign items and claims it would no longer provide resources for government officials to travel abroad for medical attention. Foreign treatment by public officers should be restricted except for cases that cannot be handled in Nigeria.

Nigerian stowaways found on ship’s rudder seek asylum in Spain
The three Nigerian stowaways found on an oil tanker’s rudder after an 11-day ocean voyage from Lagos to Las Palmas in the Canary Islands are seeking asylum in Spain, officials have said. According to Spanish law, unless the stowaways seek asylum, or are minors, the ship owner or agent is responsible for returning them to their point of departure – in this case, Lagos. Given that the men are now seeking asylum, the ship is free to leave port again. The asylum seekers’ identities and their motives for leaving Nigeria and hiding on the ship’s rudder have not been made public. According to the MarineTraffic tracking website, the Malta-flagged vessel left Lagos on November 17 and arrived in Las Palmas on Monday.

ASUU warns of new crisis, seeks intervention
The Academic Staff Union of Universities on Monday warned Nigerians that if the Federal Government kept withholding their pay, a new crisis in the country’s universities would break out. It urged interested parties and well-meaning Nigerians to pressure the Federal Government into paying its members’ withheld eight-month salaries across the nation. The University of Ilorin, ASUU Chairman, Prof. Moyosore Ajao, raised the alarm at a special congress of the local branch held at the university’s main auditorium on Monday. “The only explanation for this is that the government is hell-bent on destroying ASUU in order to have the freedom to destroy public universities. “As a union of intellectuals, it is our historical responsibility to protect public universities from collapse and fight for the interest of our members as well as the interests of the Nigerian students.

China police out in force after anti-lockdown protests
Security services were out in force across China’s major cities Tuesday, which for the time being appeared to have quelled nationwide protests calling for political freedoms and an end to Covid lockdowns. The country’s leadership faced a weekend of protests not seen in decades as anger over unrelenting lockdowns fuelled deep-rooted frustration with its political system. A deadly fire last week in Urumqi, the capital of the northwestern region of Xinjiang, was the catalyst for the outrage, with protesters taking to the streets in cities around China. The demonstrators said Covid-19 restrictions were to blame for hampering rescue efforts, claims the government has denied as it accused “forces with ulterior motives” of linking the fire to the strict Covid controls. They kill more people than Covid,” one 17-year-old passer-by, who asked to be identified only as Ray, told AFP.
