About 60 Nigerian students studying at a private university, GD Goenka University, in India have fled their campus after they were allegedly beaten and abused on the football field and in their hostel. According to a Nigerian student, Khaleel, the trouble erupted on Friday, when the university decided to have both Indian and Nigerian students in one team. Despite that, a few Indian students entered the field and before anyone could realise a thing, someone hit our captain on the head with an iron rod. Khaleel alleged that a group of Indian students attacked them in the hostel the next day (Saturday). Indian students, on the other hand, alleged they were attacked by a group of Nigerians.

MAKURDI – Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State has stated that Late Joseph Wantu, the Benue state Correspondent of the ‘The Guardian’ newspapers who recently lost his life to the cold hands of deatt had a deep sense of character that impacted positively on the lives of his colleague. He disclosed this in a message to members of the Correspondents’ chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Benue state council during the burial of Wantu at his hometown Tse Tsuaka, Dzev, Shangev-ya, Kwande Local Government Area (LGA) of the state last weekend. He observed that “From all accounts, the deceased Benue State Correspondent of ‘The Guardian’ was a versatile Journalist who made significant contribution to the growth and development of Journalism and the print media in the state and Nigeria as a whole. POLLIn his own remarks at the occasion, Correspondent Chapel Chairman, Tor Vande-Acka extolled the virtues of the late Wantu. Vande-Acka said Wantu, a one time Vice Chairman of the chapel has remained a rallying point for members and his wise counsel would be greatly missed.

University lecturers on Friday returned to work after the Academic Staff Union of Universities suspended its eight-month strike. “The National Industrial Court in its wisdom gave an order compelling ASUU to resume work pending the determination of the substantive suit. “We only resumed because of the court order. The Federal University Lafia stated that students would resume on October 30, 2022. Coercing lecturers unjust, says UNILAG ASUUHowever, the University of Lagos chapter of ASUU has said it is unjust for the lecturers to be forced to return to work.

Men of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested a 39-year-old man, Mfon Jeremiah, for allegedly impregnating his 13-year-old daughter (name withheld). Jeremiah, a resident of FIRRO Estate off Adesan, Mowe in the Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State, was arrested after his wife reported him to the police. Oyeyemi said the suspect was arrested following a report lodged at Mowe divisional headquarters by the mother of the victim. The PPRO said, “The mother of the victim reported that she discovered that her daughter was pregnant, and when she inquired from the daughter, she was informed that it was her father who slept with her. Upon the report, the DPO Mowe division, SP Folake Afeniforo, quickly detailed detectives to the suspect’s house where he was promptly arrested.

The Peoples Democratic Party Board of Trustees acting chairman, Adolphus Wabara, has called on all the leaders of the party to match words with action and fulfil their commitments to the party. Wabara urged the National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, to assure party members that he would relinquish his position after the 2023 elections. Wike had asked the national chairman of the party to step aside from his position, owing to claims that he pledged to resign should a northern presidential flagbearer emerge. In the aftermath of the election, the national chairman has yet to honour the pledge, which has brought the rumpus in the party. Consequently, Wike had shunned party activities, claiming that the party chairman must resign for equity, justice and fairness.

A Nigerian city with an unusually high number of twins has celebrated the phenomenon at an annual festival. Nearly every family in the south-western city of Igbo-Ora has twins or other multiple births, according to local chief Jimoh Titiloye. A 30-year-old man, Felix Ikpeha, has been arrested by operatives of the Ogun State Security Network, otherwise known as the Amotekun Corps for being in possession of three bloodstained wet female pants. The state Commander of the corps, David Akinremi, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday in Abeokuta. Akinremi said the suspect was arrested following an alarm raised by some members of the community who suspected his movement. He said “When the suspect was searched, three bloodstained wet female pants were found in his possession for which he could not give any satisfactory explanation. The corps commander disclosed that the suspects were previously operating in Benin Republic, but relocated to Nigeria after they were dislodged by the Benenois authority.

World 100m hurdles champion and record holder Tobi Amusan is delighted to have been nominated for the Women’s World Athlete of the Year 2022 award. The 25-year-old is among the 10 women athletes released Wednesday morning by World Athletics as nominees for the award. “I’m so honoured to be selected as a World Athlete of the Year nominee and the first Nigerian ever to reach this height. A Federal High Court sitting in Awka, Anambra State, has sentenced a 21-year-old man, Chinedu Eziuzo, to seven months’ imprisonment for raping his 14-year-old sister in Adazi-Enu, in the Anaocha Local Government Area of the state. Eziuzo was said to have committed the crime in 2021, but was arrested on May 30, 2022. The judge, Dr Nnamdi Dimgba, said the sentence would commence from the day of his arrest. He was further handed down a non-custodial sentence of community service of not less than three hours daily.

Three men have been arrested for allegedly attempting to kidnap their former employer, Ifenuga Olayinka after sacking them in the Ijebu-Ode area of Ogun State. The three suspects: Peter Nse, 24; Chuckwuma Nwobodo, 48, and Michael Umanah, 30 were arrested following the complaint lodged by the former employer. The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, SP, Abimbola Oyeyemi disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday. “Upon the report, the DPO Igbeba division, CSP Musiliu Doga, detailed his detectives to unravel those behind the devilish message. “Their arrest led the detectives to Ago- Iwoye where the third suspect Michael Umanah was apprehended.

India’s government will push Apple, Samsung and other mobile phone manufacturers to prioritise rolling out software upgrades to support 5G in the country, amid concerns that many of their models are not ready for the recently launched high-speed service. But Apple’s iPhone models, including the latest iPhone 14, and many of Samsung’s premier phones do not have software compatible with supporting 5G in India, according to three industry sources and Airtel’s website. Apple Inc, Samsung Electronics, Vivo, Xiaomi Corp, as well as the three domestic telecom operators, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Airtel’s website on Tuesday showed “Apple yet to update software” for all of Apple iPhones’ 12 to 14 models under its 5G compatible section. The lack of 5G software upgrades has already irked users.
