Maersk’s American unit has been ordered to pay over $700,000 to a former employee who was fired after complaining about vessel safety to the US Coast Guard. In December 2020, a chief mate aboard the 4,154 Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit (TEU) Safmarine Mafadi, now Maersk Tennessee, reported a list of concerns about the ship’s condition. Following the vessel’s inspection, Virginia-based Maersk Line suspended the seafarer and then terminated his employment in March 2021 for making the complaint without notifying the company first. A federal whistleblower investigation by the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), should Maersk’s termination of the seaman violated the federal Seaman’s Protection Act and ordered Maersk Line to reinstate the seaman and pay $457,759 in back wages, interest, compensatory damages and $250,000 in punitive damages. “Federal law protects a seaman’s right to report safety concerns to federal regulatory agencies, a fact every maritime industry employer and vessel owner must know,” said OSHA regional administrator, Eric S. Harbin.

Airtel Africa said Thursday that it swung to a pretax loss in the first quarter of fiscal 2024 after booking higher costs, and that their results had been affected by foreign exchange headwinds stemming from the devaluation of the Nigerian naira in June. The London-listed, Africa-focused telecom and mobile money-services provider said it expected the foreign exchange reforms to improve liquidity over time, and that continuing to reduce its foreign exchange exposure will remain a focus area for the group. AdvertisementFor the quarter ended June 30 pretax loss was $221 million compared with a pretax profit of $276 million for the first quarter of fiscal 2023, the company said. Airtel also reported a swing to a loss after tax of $151 million, from a profit after tax figure of $175 million. Airtel said this was driven by a foreign exchange loss of $471 million recorded in finance cost before tax, and $371 million after tax due to the devaluation of Nigeria’s currency.

There has been much talk about a Second Industrial Revolution for the Third World. The so-called Asian Tigers doggedly researched and produced themselves out of Third to First World, to believe Lee Kuan Yew. What it simply means is that Tinubu won but Obi and Atiku did not lose. More power must flow from the center to the periphery if Nigeria must do things differently and attain Industrial Revolution. Lest we forget, it was centralization that bogged down China from attaining Industrial Revolution ahead of decentralized but competitive Europe.
