Special Adviser to the Governor on Due Process, Dr Oluebube Chukwu says, there is need for collective efforts by all Abians in achieving cleaner environment, hence the declaration, by Gov. Alex Otti, a state of emergency on waste management in major cities of the state. The Governor’s aide while noting the importance of collective efforts in achieving a cleaner environment, stated that the present administration of Governor Alex Otti has shown great dedication to addressing environmental issues in Abia State as well as ensuring public health, hence the declaration of a state of emergency on waste management in the state. While pointing out that “Cleanliness is next to godliness”, the Governor’s aide urged Abians to embrace that philosophy in their daily lives by adopting cleanliness as a way of life, stating that Abians could set an inspiring example for other states in addition to positively impacting the state’s overall environmental health. He applauded the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Dr Caleb Ajagba for leading the charge towards ensuring a cleaner environment in line with the present administration’s objective of improving the living conditions of the citizenry.

Iraq and Kuwait will work towards reaching a definitive agreement on demarcating their borders, including a contested maritime area of the Gulf, their foreign ministers said on Sunday. While Iraqi officials have previously expressed a readiness to recognize Kuwait’s land border, the maritime border remains a point of contention. Baghdad insists that the delineation should provide it unhindered access to Gulf waters, a lifeline for its economy and oil exports. He told reporters the border talks would “continue through various technical committees”. Sabah said there was “complete consensus” between Kuwait and Iraq to “resolve outstanding problems between the two countries, particularly the demarcation of maritime boundaries”.

Flood may sack four million Nigerians, says IOM
The International Organisation for Migration has warned that 4.2 million Nigerians are at risk of displacement as the annual rainy season intensifies in 2023. This prediction is part of the IOM’s 2023 Nigeria Response Overview Disaster Preparedness Plan issued in response to the country’s growing threat of climate-induced disaster. The National Emergency Management Agency said the 2012 flood disaster, the worst in over 40 years, displaced nearly 2.3 million people, killed 363, and destroyed or damaged about 597,476 houses. In October 2022, the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development revealed that floods displaced over 1.4 million people, killed over 603 persons and injured more than 2,400 persons. Seven hundred thousand of the displaced persons were in Bayelsa State, where floods submerged about 300 communities after torrential rains.

Russia does not reject peace talks with Ukraine — Putin
Russian President, Vladimir Putin has said he does not reject the idea of peace talks on Ukraine. Putin stated this after meeting African leaders in St Petersburg, he said an African and Chinese initiative could serve as a basis for finding peace. Putin told the late-night press conference on Saturday that there were no plans to intensify action on the Ukrainian front for now. In the wide-ranging briefing, the Russian president told reporters that Moscow carried out some “preventive strikes” after an explosion on a Crimean bridge earlier this month. Following the bridge incident, which left two people dead, Putin vowed to respond to what he claimed was a “terrorist” act by Ukraine.

The African Development Bank (http://www.AfDB.org) is joining forces with the United Nations Environment Programme to advance implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework in Africa (KMGBF). The African Development Bank and UNEP will partner to establish an Expert Group on Biodiversity Finance, which will provide African countries with knowledge and technical assistance to mobilize greater biodiversity finance for implementation of the framework. She said: “The African Development Bank recognizes the importance of biodiversity finance in complementing existing development assistance and climate finance to African countries. To that end, the 15th Conference of the Parties (COP15) to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) adopted the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework for protecting nature and halting biodiversity loss around the world.
