TO achieve the United Nations zero hunger agenda for 2030, leaders at every sphere of governance have the responsibility to design and implement policies for transforming food systems. Food security, a social condition for zero hunger, can be achieved when governments provide solutions to the core challenges affecting small-scale farmers. First, governments at the subnational and local levels have a responsibility to ensure that the primary purpose of governments is actualized. With many organizations and institutions working to achieve zero hunger at different levels, leaders at local levels must harness collective effort, stakeholders’ engagement, shared commitment and firm political will to transform food systems within their states and local governments. Local leaders must recognize that food security requires multi-dimensional approach to advance and promote sustainable, smart and modern technologies and fair food distribution systems.

The police in Delta state have arrested a 50-year-old community Chief and husband of four wives for allegedly defiling a 14-year-old girl at Ebedei Ukwuole, in the Ukwuani local government area of the state. Detectives from Umutu police station had swooped on the alleged rapist (name withheld) after earlier assaulting the Junior Secondary School class one student (name withheld) twice. Sources stated the secret came out when the victim opened up to her mother who noticed the daughter was bleeding excessively. Investigation revealed that the Chief, a father of several children, allegedly gave the girl N50.00 before luring her to an uncompleted building. “The third attempt was what exposed him after he allegedly forced her to take drugs unknown to her”, a source revealed.
