The WEF representatives spoke positively of immersive technologies such as cryptocurrency, non-fungible tokens (NFTs), the blockchain, and decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs). The group also takes intrigue into the ways Web3 and DAO platforms can digitally reconnect businesses and communities. DAOs provide businesses with ‘flat’ workplace structures, as opposed to hierarchical ones, giving stakeholder communities more power over conventional executives. Firms can digitally reach out to gig economy-style workforces operating on Metaverse or DAO platforms to provide HR, finance, accounting, and customer experience services. The WEF also outlines how DAO platforms help to connect brands and businesses with audiences.

The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) aims to block Meta Platforms and Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s Chief Executive and Founder, from buying out Within Unlimited, the organisation announced on Wednesday. Within’s hit fitness app Supernatural has become involved in a fresh anticompetitive case against the Menlo Park-based firm, with the FTC slamming Meta’s “attempt to illegally acquire” the app. Meta already owns a best-selling virtual reality fitness app, and it had the capabilities to compete even more closely with Within’s popular Supernatural app. It added Meta’s acquisition of Beat Saber could potentially weaken competition by limiting innovation after buying out Supernatural. Meta Faces FTC, Earnings WoesThe news comes after the FTC launched an anticompetitive case in January against the metaverse tech giant, along with representatives from North Carolina, New York, and Tennessee.

South Tripoli Court of Appeals has postponed to next Wednesday considering the appeal of Mustafa Sanallah, ex-chairman of the National Oil Corporation (NOC), against the decision to sack him by the Government of National Unity's (GNU) Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah. Dbiebah appointed Farhat Bengdara as new chairman of NOC, saying Sanallah's appointment in 2014 was not legal - a notion communicated also by the Oil and Gas Ministry that said the appointment at the time was temporary by a deputy minister. However, Sanallah said Dbiebah's sacking decision was null and void as his government's legitimacy expired. In the midst of this fuss, US ambassador Richard Norland said it is legal to appeal the NOC's change of board of directors at court but not to use violence.

Arms trafficking from Libya to Niger is back in business2022-07-28Arms and ammunition seizures by security forces in Niger’s Agadez and Tahoua regions between January 2021 and February 2022 helped dismantle trafficking networks in the country. Is arms trafficking from Libya to countries in the south on the rise again? After the fall of Libyan president Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, southward arms flows from Libya rose significantly. A solution to Libya’s current crisis could increase arms trafficking, as local demand decreasesThe new arms flows from Libya aren’t as substantial as those preceding the country’s second civil war, which ended with a ceasefire in October 2020. Niger’s responses to arms trafficking must be strengthened to address this risk.

A decade ago, such domestic violence crimes targeting women were very rare in Libya. Murder for honour crimes includes murder of woman accused of "fornication", whether she is married or not. It is very unlikely that any security "approach would end the women targeted violence", according to Mustafa Ben Yahia, a political analyst. Arab League urges Libya politicians to preserve state institutionsA female Tripoli-based law student, speaking anonymously, told MEMO, "Libyan women are victims of social taboos", preventing them from reporting family violence. She added "they cannot seek divorce" either, since women divorcees in Libya are "immediately outcast", not only by the patriarchal society, but by women, too.

Over the past week, fighting in Tripoli and Misrata has claimed at least 17 lives in Libya, many of them civilians. Both Fathi Bashagha, one of Libya’s two competing prime ministers, and Abdul Hamid Dbeibah, whose internationally recognized administration is based in Tripoli, are from Misrata. The shutdown resulted in a loss of revenue to the Libyan government of more than $3 billion. The third-biggest city in Libya and the location of its main port, Misrata is referred to as the country’s economic center and is seen as a significant source of influence in western Libya. Many others in Misrata share that sentiment, which has given Bashagha an opportunity he did not previously have.

It will be recalled that the Bar Association had announced on 19 July that it was suspending work as of 24 July. This came on the back of the assault on a lawyer, Abdullah Ali Farhat, on 18 July in the Tripoli Courts and Prosecutions Complex (Saidi Street, Ben Ghasheer) by members of the Special Deterrence Force (Rada/SDF). In the past six months, three other lawyers have been assaulted, and arbitrarily arrested and detained. LONDON: Oil rose by $1 a barrel on Wednesday as a report of lower inventories in the United States and cuts in Russian gas flows to Europe offset concern about weaker demand and a looming US interest rate hike. Industry group the American Petroleum Institute said on Tuesday crude stocks fell by 4 million barrels, four times the forecast decline. “Coupled with the Fed decision on interest rates, today is sure to be a heavy US-centric session,” said Stephen Brennock of oil broker PVM. Brent crude rose 91 cents, or 0.9%, to $105.31 a barrel at 0811 GMT. Since then, concerns of economic slowdown and rising interest rates have weighed, despite supply outages in Libya and Nigeria and cuts in Russian gas flows to Europe.

Osama Al-Juwaili, a military officer based in Tripoli, met on Wednesday with several armed groups loyal to outgoing prime minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, a source told The Libya Update. Al-Juwaili, who backs Bashagha, told the armed groups that Dbeibeh must leave office peacefully to “spare Tripoli the war and loss”, according to the source, who requested anonymity for safety concerns. The source noted that most armed groups “did not appear to be strongly attached to Dbeibeh”. The meeting reportedly ended without a final agreement, which led Al-Juwaili to request another meeting with other armed forces from Tripoli and Misurata to “come up with a unanimous opinion against the government of Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh”. The source noted that two of the biggest armed groups in Tripoli, the Deterrence Force (Radaa) and the 444th Brigade, did not attend the meeting as they distant themselves from Dbeibeh and claimed to be “neutral”.
