The more common sea route for asylum seekers from the Middle East and Africa seeking a better life in Europe is from Turkey to Greece or Italy. “Due to the high number of passengers and the poor health conditions, the vessel was unseaworthy,” the coast guard said in a statement Tuesday. It said the migrants — whose nationalities were not made public — had paid between $6,500-8,000 each to be taken to Italy. On June 28, 166 migrants on an unseaworthy fishing boat that had left Lebanon for Italy were rescued off Karpathos. Greece’s coast guard charged six people on board with migrant smuggling in that case.

MTV has become one of the first mainstream television channels to launch a “Best Metaverse Performance” category for its annual Video Music Awards show, it wrote in a press release last week. The ceremony will reveal the winner among nominated hit artists such as Twenty One Pilots, Ariana Grande, BTS, Justin Bieber, Charli XCX and Blackpink, who debuted their Metaverse concerts on Roblox, Fortnite, Minecraft, Wave, Roblox, and PUBG: Mobile, respectively. MTV has opened voting for the best artist and plans to reveal the winners on 28 August. The company said it kicked off the category to recognise artists increasingly entering the virtual space. Metaverse concerts have begun expanding rapidly among several of the world’s largest platforms, including Decentraland, The Sandbox, Fortnite, Meta’s Horizon Worlds, Roblox, and others, leading to a resurgence of the music and filming industry and new mediums for engaging with artists and fans with Web3 and immersive technologies.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed his sincere gratitude to Stephanie Williams, who has just concluded her assignment as his Special Adviser on Libya, according to Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesman for the UN Secretary-General. “He is thankful for her service to the organization and her dedication in pursuit of a solution to the political crisis in Libya,” Dujarric said in a statement. Williams’ deep knowledge and experience of Libya, and her remarkable ability to foster conditions conducive for dialogue and consensus among all stakeholders, has led to key achievements in the political, security and economic dialogue tracks,” the statement pointed out. Williams made critical contributions to the signing of a nation-wide ceasefire agreement in October 2020, to the adoption of the political roadmap by the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum in November 2020, and to the unprecedented level of consensus achieved in the Joint Committee of the House of Representatives and the High State Council on a constitutional framework for elections,” it added. The statement said Secretary-General reiterated the commitment of the United Nations to support a Libyan-led and Libyan-owned process to address outstanding challenges and ensure the holding of presidential and parliamentary elections as soon as possible.

Former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi Tuesday said that the party will challenge the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP’s) verdict in court, using political and legal means. The ECP, in a unanimous verdict, said that the PTI received foreign funds from 34 individuals and 351 businesses. In addition, PTI took funds from an American businessman, the ECP said, issuing a show-cause notice to the party. “Today’s verdict proved that there was no foreign funding case. The former foreign minister added that the coalition government had wished that the PTI should be nullified.

Parliament Speaker Mustafa Şentop highlighted Turkey’s support for Libya’s territorial integrity in a meeting with his Libyan counterpart Aguila Saleh in the capital Ankara on Tuesday. “For Turkey, Libya is a whole with its west, east and south and cannot be divided. He noted that the newly formed government appointed by the House of Representatives prioritizes presidential and parliamentary elections, as he pointed to Turkey’s support for Libya in this regard. Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu in December said that Saleh and Haftar had backtracked on a potential meeting. Once again, two competing governments are vying for control in Libya, already torn by more than a decade of civil war.

COLUMBUS (AP) — The Ohio Supreme Court has upheld the death penalty for a man who shot and killed a couple whose house and dog he was caring for while they were away on vacation. Death row inmate George Brinkman pleaded guilty to the 2017 deaths of Rogell and Roberta John and was sentenced to death by a three-judge Stark County panel. The state Supreme Court on Thursday rejected arguments by Brinkman’s attorneys that he should be spared because of childhood abuse he suffered and mental health issues. Brinkman, 50, also received a death sentence for the killings in Cuyahoga County of a woman and her two adult daughters the day before the Johns were slain. Brinkman is awaiting a new trial in that case after the state Supreme Court threw out his conviction and death sentence, saying a three-judge panel failed to inform him about his right to question witnesses.

“Merlins are a big threat to their recovery,” said Nathan Cooper, a research ecologist with Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute. Rather, they illustrate nature’s complexity and the importance of protecting biological communities, not just individual species. Fishing groups contend the seals could threaten cod stocks that regulators are struggling to rebuild after decades of overfishing. NATURE AT WORKConflicts between recovering species and ones still in trouble don’t always mean something is wrong, scientists say. The eagle’s recovery “complicates the conservation of certain other species,” Lyons said.

TRIPOLI: A European Union drone is helping Libyan forces intercept boats carrying migrants in the Mediterranean, who are then "hauled back to arbitrary detention and abuse", Human Rights Watch said on Monday. "Frontex claims the surveillance is to aid rescue, but the information facilitates interceptions and returns to Libya ... (despite) overwhelming evidence of torture and exploitation of migrants and refugees in Libya," HRW said in a statement. HRW said Frontex’s drone appeared to have helped Libyan forces intercept a boat in international waters, without informing nearby rescuers. It said it was investigating how "the shift from sea to air surveillance contributes to the cycle of extreme abuse in Libya". The HRW report comes days after media reports that Frontex routinely covered up illegal "pushbacks" of migrants by the Greek coastguard.
