AdvertisementShe called on Aguila Saleh, the influential parliament speaker, and Khaled al-Meshri, head of the Tripoli-based council to convene within 10 days to try and bridge the gaps between the two sides. The Tripoli-based council insisted on banning military personal from running for the country’s top post — apparently a move directed at commander Khalifa Hifter, a divisive military leader. That vote was not held because of myriad issues, including controversial hopefuls and disputes about election laws. During the talks in Cairo, the east-based lawmakers called for allowing military personnel to run in a subsequent vote. The country was then for years split between rival administrations in the east and west, each supported by different militias and foreign governments.

Libyan commander of the western coast military zone, Salah Al-Deen Al-Namroush accused media outlets of misinterpreting his press statements which he had made in an interview with French magazine Jeune Afrique in the past few days, saying that “some of the terms that came in the context of his speech to the magazine were twisted to reverse the meaning and thus they were made to contradict the entire context of the conversation. Al-Namroush said that the Government of National Unity sought and is still seeking to establish peace and defend the “sanctity of Libyan blood and the unity of its territory”. Al-Namroush said in a statement to the Military Media Office of the Ministry of Defense that the unity government had gone through many difficult circumstances, especially the closure of the oil ports and the failure to adopt the budget, which was the reason for the failure in the performance of the government. “There are supervisory bodies whose mission and responsibility is to evaluate their performance, and it is not within my authority, as a military officer, to do so.” He added. In an interview with Jeune Afrique, Al-Namroush said that he “does not understand how France and Russia can be on the same side with Khalifa Haftar,” pointing out that France supported Haftar during the last war (2019-2020) 100% with weapons and intelligence.

Dbeibeh was close to former Libyan strongman Gaddafi.Interestingly, India heads the Libya Sanctions Committee in the UNSC. In March, India through the UNSC , called for holding the Presidential and Parliamentary elections in the North African country at the earliest. India's political ties with Turkey, a close Pak ally, have been lukewarm over the years. "Turkey's deployment of Syrian fighters to Libya was considered by the UN to be an act that threatens the peace, stability and security of Libya or that obstructs or undermines the successful completion of its political transition. The letter alleged that Turkey deployed mercenaries to an armed conflict in Libya by recruiting, deploying and paying fighters, including children, from several Syrian armed groups to take part in military operations in Tripoli.

Italy maintains its military presence in Libya with a “mission that has evolved” over the years, based on the “needs proposed by the government of Tripoli”, said Italian army corps general Francesco Paolo Figliuolo during his recent visit to Libya. Figliuolo was Misurata last Thursday where met with Italian soldiers of the Hippocrates Task Force. However, according to Figliuolo, the mission has evolved because the threat of ISIS is “no longer immanent and strong as it was in the past months and years”. “Today our mission has evolved,” Figliuolo told Italian soldiers in Misurata. “It has changed on the basis of the needs proposed by the government of Tripoli”.
