Saudi crown prince pays 1st visit to Turkey since death of journalist KhashoggiBy IANS Published: Updated On - 08:31 AM, Thu - 23 June 22Ankara, June 23 (IANS) Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud has arrived in Ankara, Turkey’s capital, to start his first visit to Turkey since the death of the journalist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan greeted the crown prince on Wednesday with a grand welcoming ceremony, which was followed by a private meeting between the two leaders, Xinhua news agency reported. Turkey is the third stop of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s regional tour, which also brought him to Egypt and Jordan. Khashoggi, a Saudi columnist for The Washington Post, was murdered inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in October 2018, causing international backlash against the crown prince, and plunging the bilateral ties between Saudi Arabia and Turkey onto a rock bottom. Weeks after the court’s decision, the Turkish President visited Saudi Arabia and held a meeting with the Crown Prince.

Picture: AlamyBy Theo UsherwoodLibya is the key to stopping migrants from Africa travelling to Britain, the country’s Prime Minister-designate has told LBC. But speaking through an interpreter, Mr Bashagha told LBC he could cut the number of migrants leaving Libya in the first place if he had the right support. “With respect to the British Government, it is mainly training, logistic support and technology support to secure our borders,” he said. It is a dangerous journey for them, as well.”A Whitehall source told LBC that as things stand Mr Bashagha is not currently recognised by the British government.

And prepare for a possible nuclear war," said Lee, voicing a desire that a February poll showed was shared by 3 out of 4 South Koreans. Her country renounced nuclear weapons development after the Soviet Union shattered, opting for economic assistance and integration with the West and security assurances. The West compelled Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi to give up his country's rudimentary nuclear weapons program in 2003. Then the U.S. overthrew Saddam in 2003 on a spurious claim he was reassembling a nuclear weapons effort. The world's nine nuclear powers — the United States, Russia, France, China, the United Kingdom, Pakistan, India, Israel and North Korea — hold some 13,000 nuclear weapons.

Much of Libya has for years been dominated by armed forces that control territory and vie for position while formally acting as paid elements of state security, their presence strikingly apparent during a recent Reuters visit. Any prolonged clashes among the different factions in Tripoli could spill over into a wider conflict drawing in forces from across Libya in a new phase of war that would hit civilians hardest. Dbeibah still appears to have the support of most of the main armed forces in the capital, but some back Bashagha. "Because there's no political outlet for discussion and no political process, it makes clashes more likely," said Emadeddin Badi of the Atlantic Council. When Bashagha tried to enter Tripoli last month, clashes broke out between rival groups, forcing him to quit the city.

The UN spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, said in a UN briefing on Tuesday that the UN can only be disappointed by the fact that the various Libyan factions failed to come to an agreement for the sake of people of their own country, and for the sake of the millions who registered to vote and wanted to be able to express their political opinions freely. The Libyan House of Representatives (HoR) and High Council of State (HCS) ended their third and final round of talks in Cairo on Monday without agreeing on all differences. Dujarric said that his understanding about the Cairo talks for a Libyan constitutional basis was that there may be another meeting within the next 10 days. “I think it’s never too late to come to some sort of an agreement, and we hope that Libyan leaders will put, first and foremost, the interests of the Libyan people at the top of their agenda.” Dujarric added. The UN Advisor Stephanie Williams has previously called on the HoR and HCS to pick a place for a meeting in ten days from June 20, while the Head of the HCS Khalid Al-Mishri told Williams in a letter last Monday that he was ready to meet with the Speaker of the HoR in Ghadames city.

One day, we were put on a bus and told: “You’re in a war zone, we realise that this place is not safe for you. You will be driven to the UNHCR Gathering and Departure Facility in Tripoli.”Everyone was happy. It was known that those who were housed in this centre were selected to be evacuated from Libya to Europe or North America. UNHCR said we were going to live safe in this city, but for us, Tripoli is neither free nor safe.

The United Nations has expressed disappointed after Libya’s House of Representative and High Council of State failed to reach an agreement on constitutional basis for holding national elections in the country. The talks, which stared on June 12, had sought to establish a constitutional framework for elections in Libya, but the two sides failed to agree onthe measures governing the transitional period leading to the vote. U.N. Advisor on Libya, Stephanie Williams, called on chairmen of both chambers, Aguila Saleh and Khaled Al-Mishri to convene a meeting within 10 days in mutually agreed location to try and bridge the gaps between the two sides. “My understanding is that there may be another meeting within the next 10 days,” Dujarric said during his press conference. “I think it’s never too late to come to some sort of an agreement, and we hope that Libyan leaders will put, first and foremost, the interests of the Libyan people at the top of their agenda.”

When Bashagha tried to enter Tripoli last month, clashes broke out between rival groups, forcing him to quit the city. Waiting in the wings, eastern commander Khalifa Haftar, an ally of the parliament that appointed Bashagha, could take advantage of any conflict between the Tripoli armed groups. Haftar's supporters present him as an antidote to the chaos and lawlessness of rule by rival armed groups in western Libya. However, his own Libyan National Army is also a coalition of different armed factions and a U.N. panel of experts on Libya has reported numerous abuses associated with it.

As the captain steered his vessel back towards Malta, the political fallout was already becoming clear. Almost three years since the vessel El Hiblu 1 arrived in Malta, the prosecution hasn’t formulated an official charge. The charges brought against the three young men cannot be justified, their treatment to date beyond reprehensible. The Commission is calling on Malta to immediately dismiss the proceedings against the three youth.

LONDON : Libya's parliament-appointed Prime Minister Fathi Bashagha said on Wednesday his government supported removing all foreign forces and mercenaries from Libya, guided by a committee set up to safeguard a ceasefire after the 2014-2020 conflict. "We support that approach strongly, strongly, strongly," he said via a translator, adding that he did not have any relationship with Moscow and that he would work through the 5+5 committee. The role of the Wagner Group in Africa has been put in the spotlight since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February, with fears that it could further destabilise the region. That assault was turned back when Turkey brought its own forces into the conflict in support of the Tripoli government. Both Wagner and Turkey have established military bases in Libya and remain there despite a clause in the 2020 ceasefire demanding all foreign forces leave.
