TUNIS: Tunisian police have arrested former prime minister Ali Larayedh, his far-right Ennahdha party said Tuesday, accusing authorities of trying to divert attention from calls for President Kais Saied to quit. The arrest of the Ennahdha number two comes just days after nearly 90 percent of voters boycotted an election to a toothless new parliament established by Saied following his seizure of sweeping powers in 2021. Ennahdha, which like almost all Tunisian parties boycotted the vote, accused Saied’s government of “systematically targeting” its leadership. Chebbi’s National Salvation Front, which includes Ennahdha, had said the slim election turnout should be a cue for Saied to step down. But Saied hit back at his critics Monday, noting that some of them had criminal charges hanging over them, a veiled reference to investigations into Ennahdha officials.

The head of the National Movement Party, Mustafa al-Zaidi, called for a popular uprising to overthrow the government of Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, which he described as “lacking legitimacy.”The invitation is also addressed to the ministers of the Dbeibeh government to “get out of it so as not to be placed in a position of concealing its crimes,” said Al-Zaidi, who is considered one of the leading figures in the late Muammar Gaddafi’s regime. The Dbeibeh government faces widespread criticism and popular discontent after his government’s decision to extradite the Libyan citizen, Abu Agila Masoud Al-Marimi, to the United States, and to reopen the Lockerbie file, which was settled with Western countries during the Gaddafi era.

The Libyan Justice Minister, Khaled Masoud, said Fathi Bashagha’s government is to form a team of lawyers to defend Abu Agila al-Marimi, who was extradited to the United States for alleged involvement in the 1988-Lockerbie bombing. The Minister added, in an interview with Sputnik, “Despite our full belief that this person is innocent and his name was not mentioned during the Lockerbie investigations, the government will form a team of lawyers to defend him.”He announced the Libyan government’s strong condemnation of what the US had done to arrest a Libyan person who enjoys all rights inside his country, and to detain him in this way and put him on trial without referring to the Libyan state. The Minister of Justice confirmed that the Lockerbie case was settled legally and with international auspices, and that there were no longer any obligations on the Libyan side. Masoud stated that the mandate of Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh government was expired, and what it had done (Marimi’s extradition) was contrary to international agreements, covenants and norms. He indicated that they are in the process of preparing a complete legal memorandum and referring it to Prime Minister Fathi Bashagha to address the competent authorities, and to empower the al-Marimi’s defense team.

According to a report by Emerged Research, VR technology will propel the extended reality (XR) market to roughly $1,246.57 billion by 2025. A significant portion of the virtual reality market still belongs to the consumer space. Temporarily disruptive immersive industry events such as social media stock crashes, Meta’s reshuffling, and Bytedance’s FTC investigation led to roadblocks. However, a recession still looks the most likely scenario in the eurozone. However, moderating energy prices may mean that the recession is actually shorter and shallower than it might otherwise have been. Just as the expected recession has not arrived yet, neither has the anticipated sharp downgrade to corporate earnings. If Europe does enter a recession, downgrades to corporate earnings are likely to ensue. Eleven agricultural and environmental organisations are calling on the Prime Minister to ensure suitable agricultural land valuation methods are integrated into legislation concerning agricultural leases. “Sadly, this amendment also removed the only guidelines on which agricultural land valuation could have been established,” it said. “Most importantly, the organisations insist that since any amendments discussed in Parliament will greatly affect farmers facing eviction, there is an urgent need to include agricultural land valuation guidelines that safeguard farmers,” Moviment Graffitti said in a statement. “This pricing should not be subject to market speculation but should use fair methods which ensure that rental leases are affordable for farmers. The organisations remain hopeful that, as key stakeholders in the agricultural sector, they too can be more involved in consultative processes concerning future legislation procedures.
