Most of those have arrived independently, and not with charity boats, officials have said. Along with the new measures, Italian officials have been assigning ports further and further north, away from the migrant routes.

Mr Collins warned there “would have been civil war in Ireland” if a major shipment like the Eksund had reached IRA active service units. He also challenged the Libyans over their controversial support for the IRA, saying Ireland had been “good friends to Libya”. “They had explained that Ireland wants good relations with Libya but that Libya must stop supplying weapons for the IRA.

Mayor of Zulten survives assassination attempt
The Municipal Council of Zulten has condemned the assassination attempt that targeted its Mayor, Omar Saleh Al-Saghir. In a statement, the council held the relevant security and law enforcement agencies responsible for the security chaos in the region, warning it would take action and close the municipality's entrances "to protect" its residents from such acts. The General Secretariat of the Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture of the Mediterranean (ASCAME) is to hold its next meeting in Tripoli in May 2023, the Tripoli Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture reported today. This decision was taken during the meeting between the Chairman and members of the Management Committee of Tripoli Chamber with the President and members of the General Secretariat of ASCAME on the side-lines of the International Conference of the Mediterranean “MEDA WEEK” held in November in Barcelona, Spain. Tripoli Chamber reported that during the MEDA meetings the role of the Association of Mediterranean Chambers of Commerce and Industry in supporting the member chambers of commerce were discussed. Ways to enhance the role of Tripoli Chamber of Commerce at the regional and international levels and provide the necessary support to organize the next ASCAME session in May 2023 in Tripoli were also discussed.

Marsa shovel attack victim declines to testify against his alleged attacker
A man who had been hit in the head with a shovel during an assault outside a Marsa garage last year has refused to testify against his alleged aggressor. The compilation of evidence against Khaled Eddali from Libya continued before magistrate Monica Vella on Tuesday with a second victim of the 7 November 2021 attack taking the witness stand. Another man wounded by the accused during the incident was also due to testify today. Before Rashid began testifying today, the court was advised to caution the witness, which it proceeded to do. Inspector Roderick Attard Omar Zammit and Lydon ZammitEddali’s lawyer was not in court today, having previously informed the court that he would not be able to attend.
