Libya’s last chance ahead of partitionOsama Al-SharifShort Url https://arab.news/pjx8vThe inter-Libyan dialogue has been going on, at various levels, for years. The main issue in post-Qaddafi Libya is about who will rule the vast, oil-rich, sparsely populated North African country? After all, he controls Benghazi, much of the south and his troops can overrun the oil crescent at a moment’s notice. It is up to the Libyan people and their representatives to save their own country from foreign intervention and what seems to be a plausible scenario — partition. Failing to do so, the likely thing to happen is that Libya will revert to pre-state conditions paving the way for partition along tribal lines.

European charity SOS Mediterranée said its Ocean Viking vessel has rescued 113 migrants off the coast of Libya on Monday night. The group, which included 30 unaccompanied minors and 23 women, was attempting to make the crossing in a rubber boat. Italy plans tougher controlsThis latest rescue comes as Italy's most right-wing government in decades is studying measures to limit the action of NGOs working to rescue migrants at sea. It said it wanted to discourage charity rescue missions, claiming that they essentially help facilitate smugglers' business. If confirmed, it will mean that NGO ships can only carry out one rescue before immediately informing the Coast Guard and requesting the assignment of a 'safe port'.
