The Central Bank of Libya (CBL) announced Sunday that its reserves of gold are still the same without decrease since August 20, 2011, in response to the report of the World Gold Council on gold reserves in Libya. CBL stated in a statement on its official Facebook page that it had carried out an international audit of gold reserves during the year 2022, and the results confirmed that the bank maintained the same reserves without any change since August 2011. It is noteworthy that World Gold Council had reported that Libya’s gold reserves decreased to 116.64 tons in 2014 after they were 143.82 tons in 2011. CBL called on all media outlets to investigate accuracy and credibility when publishing any data related to its competence and activity.

International Organization for Migration (IOM) announced Monday that 36 migrants were intercepted and returned to Libya in the period of 8-14 January 2023. IOM said last Monday that 1,067 migrants were intercepted and returned to Libya in the period of 1-7 January. In 2022, according to IOM, 24,684 were intercepted and returned to Libya, 529 died, and 848 went missing on the Central Mediterranean route. In 2021, 32,425 were intercepted and returned to Libya, 662 died, and 891 went missing, IOM statistics say.

Over 100 industrial and commercial Tunisian establishments participated in the Libyan-Tunisian Exhibition for the Development of Industry and Trade held in Misrata from 16 to 18 January. The National Centre for Health System Reform organized a workshop in Tripoli on Saturday entitled “Developing the Libyan Health System”, the Libyan Health Ministry reported today. It reported that a number of experts presented working papers on the development of the health system in terms of five main axes: health care, medical education, medical supply, digital transformation, financing and management, and health legislation. The NCHSR’s aim was to coordinate national efforts and international backing to reform and modernise the system. Headed initially by Samir Sagar, it operates in collaboration with the health ministry, and springs out of the Libya Health System Strengthening Programme (LHSS), set up between the Libyan authorities and the European Union. A very large percentage of Libyans still use foreign countries for their health needs.

An eyewitness had told police about the moment when she saw two men dragging murder victim Sion Grech into a field by her hair, where they both stabbed her repeatedly, the jury trying two men for the murder has heard. The men are accused of the 2005 murder of Grech, a transsexual sex worker, who was brutally stabbed to death and dumped in a Marsa field. Calleja told the court that the police had been unable to obtain suitable CCTV footage relating to the day of the murder. She said she had seen the two men stabbing Grech, whom she described as screaming in terror. Rapinett had told Bonnici everything she knew after the policeman had received an anonymous letter about the murder.

The Chairman of Libya’s Presidential Council, Mohamed Menfi, met yesterday in Cairo with the General Commander of the Libyan National Army (LNA), Khalifa Haftar, and the Speaker of House of Representatives, Aguila Saleh, Italian news agency Nova reports. Citing Libyan T.V. channel Al Ahrar, Nova stated that the tripartite meeting covered discussions to ensure consensus on electoral legislation for holding presidential and parliamentary elections. This would be the second between Menfi and Haftar in a week in the Egyptian capital.

The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Libya Abdoulaye Bathily has stressed the importance of justice for achieving reconciliation in Libya. The UN envoy made his remarks during a preparatory meeting for the Libyan National Reconciliation Conference, which is sponsored by the Libyan Presidency Council. “Today I joined the Presidential Council, members of the African Union and international dignitaries at a preparatory meeting for the Libyan National Reconciliation Conference. I commended the participants for their leadership in coming together to promote national reconciliation,” Bathily tweeted. Bathily also stressed the full support of the UN Support Mission in Libya for the national reconciliation initiative.

AMMAN - Egyptian authorities are preventing Jordanian transit trucks from entering Libya via the Salloum border crossing, according to Head of the Jordan Truck Owners Association (JTOA) Mohammad Khair Dawood. Khaled Shatnawi, a Jordanian who drives a refrigerated truck, told The Jordan Times that he and three other Jordanians were stranded at the border between Egypt and Libya for 13 days. Dawood told The Jordan Times that the cooperation agreement signed by the Jordanian-Egyptian Transport Committee allows Jordanian trucks to enter Libya through Egypt's Salloum crossing. According to Dawood, many Jordanian truckers headed to Libya through Egypt have contacted the JTOA to report similar experiences. Despite repeated attempts by The Jordan Times to contact the Land Transport Regulatory Commission, officials were unavailable to comment.

Libyan (5+5) Joint Military Commission's meetings started Sirte on Sunday with the participation of members of the JMC representing the western region and their counterparts representing Haftar's forces. The JMC two-day meetings, according to the Libyan News Agency, would deal with the results of the previous meetings regarding the ceasefire agreement, the provisions for the removal of mercenaries and foreign fighters, the file of the exchange of prisoners, as well as the file of international monitors, in addition to a number of other issues. The work of the JMC is attended by the Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Abdoulaye Bathily, and the Libyan and international ceasefire monitors. UNSMIL confirmed earlier the arrival of the UN envoy to Libya, Bathily, to Sirte on Sunday morning to attend the meetings of the JMC.

Abdul-Bari Al-Faylog, an infamous Libyan Islamist fighter, died on Sunday at age 54, according to multiple reports. Born in Tripoli in 1969, Al-Faylog joined the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG), a designated terrorist organization, in 1995 and spent subsequent years between Pakistan and Afghanistan alongside members of Al-Qaeda. He was place under watchlist by Libyan authorities until late 2003 when the regime of Muammar Gaddafi pardoned a number of Islamist figures after they claimed to have abandoned their extremist ideology. Following the Libyan second civil war in 2014, Al-Faylog joined the Benghazi Shura Council to fight against the Libyan National Army (LNA). In 2015, he was wounded in a battle and travelled Turkey for treatment.
