Livestock export ban makes progress despite N Ireland ‘loophole’ fear
But it will not extend and apply to Northern Ireland, with the UK Government saying this is to ensure Northern Ireland farmers have unfettered access to the UK and Republic of Ireland markets. Attempts by the DUP to ensure Northern Ireland was incorporated in the Bill, including a bid for the export ban not to apply to the Republic of Ireland, failed on Monday. The Government has previously said the Bill is only possible now the UK has left the European Union. Elsewhere in the debate, Labour suggested extending the livestock ban to include alpacas, llamas and deer. The Bill received an unopposed third reading and will undergo further scrutiny in the House of Lords at a later date.

Met Éireann issues ice warning as temperatures plummet in Roscommon
Temperatures in the county got down to almost minus 3 degrees this morning, Met Éireann has said. Nationally the lowest overnight air temperature was -3.8 degrees recorded at Casement Aerodrome, Baldonnel, Dublin at 6:00 am. This morning Met Éireann issued a low temperature/ice warning for the whole country, warning of possible difficult travelling conditions. The warning will come into effect at 6 p.m. this evening and last until 11 a.m. tomorrow morning. Met Éireann highlighted that the cold weather could create issues for vulnerable people as well as animal welfare issues.

The booklet, ‘Opening the door to Ireland’s heritage’ details one key heritage project from each local authority from the last three years which collectively, highlight the enormous contribution the Network has made to the preservation of our heritage over the last quarter of a century. The booklet tells the story of the Offaly Archives Project, and how the state-of-the-art archive in Tullamore came to house the extensive historical records of both Offaly County Council and Offaly History. The referendums on the family will form 'part of the reparation process' aimed at addressing the manner in which single mothers and their children were mistreated, the chief executive of One Family has said. Last month the Government approved the publication of the Thirty-ninth Amendment of the Constitution (The Family) Bill 2023 and the Fortieth Amendment of the Constitution (Care) Bill 2023. READ MOREMs Kiernan pointed to the “stigma, the legal discrimination, loss of jobs, homes and families” that so many women have encountered. She said One Family supports the “gender neutral recognition of care” and for the role of men caring for their children. She called on people to check the voting register and for people “to speak to friends and family and colleagues to raise awareness of the importance of the referendum and the need to go out and vote yes, yes”.

Extra caution advised on roads as freezing temperatures to continueMotorists are being advised to take extra care this week, as the spell of freezing weather continues with temperatures falling as low as minus five or minus six in some parts of the country. It will be bitterly cold, however, with daytime temperatures barely getting above freezing and below-zero readings every night between now and Friday. Offaly forecaster Cathal Nolan, of Ireland's Weather Channel on Facebook, said temperatures as low as -5 had been recorded in Kilkenny this morning (Monday). "A widespread severe frost will follow on Tuesday night into Wednesday morning with weather warnings for ice likely as road surfaces will be damp from any sleet, snow or rain." Weather warnings for snow and ice have been issued for a number of counties in Ulster tonight and into Tuesday morning.

Fears over homes target as blue-chip builders fall short
The number of new homes completed by stock-market listed housebuilders is set to fall below 70,000 this year in a blow to the Government's targets. It puts in jeopardy the Government's goal to build 300,000 homes a year by the mid-2020s to tackle the housing shortage. This includes all housebuilders, not just those listed on the stock market. The other housebuilders in Peel Hunt's analysis were: Crest Nicholson, Bellway, MJ Gleeson, Redrow, Springfield, Vistry and Taylor Wimpey. The number of homes expected to be completed in 2024 are even fewer than in 2020.

County Roscommon man celebrates his 107th birthday
Fairymount native Michael Coyne celebrated his 107th birthday today Sunday, January 14th with a birthday lunch in Hester’s of Castlerea. To mark the occasion Michael recited a poem for the gathering of family and friends. Michael was still driving at 98, and still likes to catch up with the news with his weekly ready of the Roscommon Herald. President Michael D Higgins has been getting in touch with him every year since he turned 100. A staunch Fianna Fail supporter all his life, Michael still carries his party membership card and his driver’s licence (valid until 2018) in his wallet.
