Space companies seek GST exemption, tax holiday
Indian Space Association (Ispa) has sought GST exemption for satellite companies and providing tax holiday in the Union Budget 2024-25 with a focus on enhancing the financial well-being of the industry. “Expand GST exemption to satellites, launch vehicles and ground equipment manufacturing. Provide tax holidays and exemptions for space sector firms. The Delhi-based group also said that a clarity on foreign direct investment (FDI) policy for the space sector, introducing production linked incentive (PLI) scheme for space-grade components and adopting space tech solutions across domains like agriculture and disaster management. It also demanded lowering the tax rate to 5% on external commercial borrowings along with capital subsidy on infrastructure investments.

Two fresh Covid deaths reported in country
NEW DELHI: Two new deaths -- one each from Karnataka and Kerala-- have been reported in a span of 24 hours, according to the ministry's data updated at 8 am. The number of daily cases had dropped to double-digits till December 5, 2023 but they again began to increase after emergence of a new variant and cold weather conditions. A single day rise of 841 new cases were reported on December 31, 2023 which is 0.2 per cent of the peak cases reported in May 2021, official sources said. India has witnessed three waves of COVID-19 in the past with the peak incidence of daily new cases and deaths being reported in the Delta wave during April-June 2021. At its peak, 4,14,188 new cases and 3,915 deaths were reported on May 7, 2021.

The key to the tiny robots’ movement is their tiny actuators. The actuator uses a material called a shape memory alloy that is able to change shapes when heated. It is called ‘shape memory’ because it remembers and then returns to its original shape. In the case of the WSU robots, however, the actuators are made of two tiny shape memory alloy wires that are 1/1000 of an inch in diameter. Compared to other technologies used to make robots move, the SMA technology also requires only a very small amount of electricity or heat to make them move.

‘Outrageous’ CEO pay targeted in new bill from Sanders, Democrats
Senator Bernie Sanders and a group of Democratic lawmakers are pushing to raise taxes for companies that pay their chief executives at least 50 times more than their typical worker’s salary, saying the bill was needed to limit corporate greed. The bill could generate $150 billion in U.S. revenue over 10 years, while companies could avoid the tax hike by raising workers’ pay and reducing CEO salaries, they added. “Americans across the political spectrum are outraged by the extreme gaps between CEO and worker pay,” the group said. Mr. Sanders, an independent, generally caucuses with the Democrats. The bill would need 60 votes to clear the Senate, which Democrats narrowly control 51-49.
