FY25 Capex target for Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) may rise by 12-13%
The Centre is likely to raise the FY25 capital expenditure target for central public sector enterprises (CPSEs) by 12-13%, people familiar with the matter said. In absolute terms, the capital expenditure of 54 CPSEs and five departmental arms of government including Railway Board and National Highways Authority of India is expected at around ₹8.20-8.30 lakh crore for the next fiscal year, said the people cited above. The capex target for CPSEs for FY24 was set at ₹ 7.33 lakh crore, up 13.4% over the revised FY23 target of ₹6.46 lakh crore. “The capex target for CPSEs is likely to be up by 12-13% in FY25,” a senior official told ET. Latest data from the Department of Public Enterprises showed CPSEs have spent ₹5.51 lakh crore as of December 31, which was 75.1% of the combined capital expenditure target for FY24.

5 GST officials booked for demanding Rs. 5 crore bribe from a Ghaziabad-based businessman
Complainant Arun Kumar Som, director of SKS Electricals, said that his company office in Ghaziabad, was raided by the GST team on July 5, 2022, under alleged allegations of violating GST rules. Som further alleged that the officials had asked for a bribe of Rs. 5 crore to ‘settle’ the matter and threatened to send him to jail in case of ‘non-payment’. 2.35 crore over the month ‘out of fear’, but the officers kept asking for more money saying that ‘the money will be distributed among the top officials’. “I somehow arranged for Rs 10 lakh and gave it to him, but he kept threatening that- you don’t know me, I will ruin your life.

Insurers’ intermediaries get Income Tax notices under benami law over alleged fund routing violations
After run-ins with income and service tax authorities last year, insurers and their agents will now have a brush with the harsh benami law. “The recent notices from the I-T department under the Benami Property Act were sent to assessees who have already been assessed u/68 of the Act on the said amount. Input tax credit (ITC) allows businesses to lower their tax liability on sale by claiming credit to the extent of GST paid on purchases. The benami twist, with the penal provision of the law, may complicate matters for various parties entangled in the disputes. These deals, challenged by tax and benami laws, were cut before 2023.

After a slew of GST demand notices, the industry is keen on an amnesty scheme in the interim budget, though experts are divided on the issue. Last year, goods and services tax (GST) authorities issued notices for around Rs 1.45 lakh crore to 1,500 businesses, reports said. “The government should come out with an amnesty scheme in a similar line as done in pre-GST regime i.e. relaxation in tax liability with no interest and penalty.”Another expert: “An amnesty scheme is not without its pitfalls. “If an amnesty scheme is announced now, taxpayers would opt for settling the notices involving procedural issues,” he said.
