Increase in retirement age has a vast and far-reaching impact on the establishment and the manner in which it runs its own business and plans for future. Increasing the retirement age across all cadres of employees in a large establishment involves a very high economic impact and therefore, it is necessary to analyze it threadbare, assess comprehensively on various relevant parameters." The Industrial Tribunal ignored all the established parameters for revising the service conditions/ wages of an establishment". The order required the group to raise the retirement age to 60 years, along with associated benefits, effective from October 15, 2009. The Industrial Tribunal has also erred in taking the option of extendibility of the retirement age from 58 to 60 years in other newspaper establishments, as a fixed retirement age of 60 years.

China: $6.3 trillion wiped off market value of stocks as investors play waiting game
(Bloomberg) — Chinese stocks ended another disappointing week, with a gauge of mainland companies listed in Hong Kong at the bottom of a global equity index ranking for this year. Locally, the slump in Chinese stocks is wreaking havoc on the country's asset management industry, pushing mutual fund closures to a five-year high. The Nasdaq Golden Dragon China Index slipped 2.2% at the start of US trading on Friday, marking its fifth consecutive day of losses. Overall, about $6.3 trillion has been wiped off the market value of Chinese and Hong Kong stocks since peaking in 2021, underscoring the challenge Beijing faces as it faces declining investor confidence. From a forward earnings forecast perspective, the MSCI China Index has never been cheaper than the S&P 500 gauge.

220 goods to get quality norms
New Delhi: About 220 products, including goods manufactured in India and imported from other countries, will have to comply with Quality Control Order (QCO) norms by May 2027 and majority of them, 218 products, would have to adhere to the regulations by the end of this year. India is attempting to improve its position in the global manufacturing and supply chain through its focus on improving quality control, which will enable India to compete with global players in international markets. QCOs are issued by various ministries under the central government after stakeholder consultations, and after the date of commencement of the order, products must comply with the norms. The Centre also issued mandatory quality norms for electrical accessories such as switch-socket-outlets and cable trunking to curb the import of sub-standard goods and boost domestic manufacturing of these goods. The Electrical Accessories (Quality Control) Order, 2023 was issued by Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) on 1 January this year.

DRI arrests Kenyan woman with 2.56kg of cocaine at KIA
BENGALURU: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Bengaluru zone, on January 15 intercepted a Kenyan woman (36) at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) and seized 2.56kg cocaine from her checked-in baggage. The value of seized cocaine is around Rs 26 crore in the international underground market. On inspection of her checked-in baggage, the DRI found 2.56kg of cocaine packed and concealed in the false bottom of her suitcase. On December 11, 2023, DRI, Bengaluru, had seized 99 capsules of cocaine weighing 2kg from a ‘body packer’ -- a Nigerian national who had ingested the contraband drug for ‘safe passage’. Cocaine is priced between Rs 11 crore and Rs 12 crore per kg in the underground market.
