NORTH CHARLESTON: Despite losing both Iowa and New Hampshire to Donald Trump, Nikki Haley is nevertheless trying to frame those losses as a victory and vowing to head off a “coronation” of Trump as the 2024 Republican nominee. Haley did perform better in Tuesday’s New Hampshire primary than she had in the Iowa caucuses a week earlier, where she finished third, well behind Trump and only slightly down from Florida Gov. Trump still won by double-digits on Tuesday night, leaving some to wonder whether she would keep going. Since 1980, only one winner of South Carolina's Republican balloting has lost the nomination. Since his 2016 primary win there helped cement Trump's dominance in that year's race, South Carolina has stayed loyal to him.

While the Congress was quick to describe Mamata as a pillar of the INDIA alliance, senior Opposition leaders argued that her positioning may be driven more by local political imperatives rather than be a sign of betrayal. At the same time, Congress and other alliance leaders continue to consider Mamata an intrinsic part of INDIA, notwithstanding her announcement to go it alone. RJD and Congress leaders deny any such possibility in formal interactions but their tone changes in off-the-record conversations. A Congress leader said: “There is a conspiracy to scuttle Mayawati’s induction into INDIA by some leaders of SP and Congress. That’s the key battlefield none of the top INDIA leaders are seriously working on.”

Businesses will be required to submit valid bank account details to GST authorities within 30 days of grant of GST registration to avoid suspension, the GST Network has said. “Taxpayers are therefore advised to promptly furnish their bank account details, who have not provided it so far if 30 days period is shortly going to expire to avoid disruption in business activities and the subsequent suspension of GSTIN,” it said. GSTN further said that a new functionality is being developed as per which taxpayers whose registration is suspended for non-submission of bank account details would be intimated through Form REG-31. If taxpayers update their bank account details in response to the intimation in Form REG-31, the suspension will be automatically revoked. If the bank account details are not updated even after 30 days of issuance of Form REG-31, the registration after suspension may also be taken up for cancellation process by the tax officer, GSTN said.

VISAKHAPATNAM : Former minister and TDP leader Ganta Srinivasa Rao said the sudden acceptance of his resignation to the MLA post after almost three years was a political conspiracy of YSRC. Speaking to mediapersons here on Wednesday, he said the Assembly Speaker did not follow the normal parliamentary procedure before accepting his resignation. “Fearing defeat in the RS elections, the YSRC pushed the acceptance of my resignation,” he averred. Ganta said he resigned in the Speaker format on February 12, 2021 protesting against the privatisation of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant. The YSRC was then afraid of a byelection on the steel plant issue.

It pointed to the shocking effect of the tectonic shift that horizontally split the Indian Plate as it pushed into the Eurasian Plate at the geologically-significant speed of 2 mm a year. The split is not like that unfolding in East Africa, which is vertical and gradually giving birth to a new micro-continent. The Indian Plate pushing into the Eurasian Plate is not a revelation, but the top and bottom layers getting split horizontally has shocked geologists. This must make the Indian government wake up to its huge responsibility of ensuring the safety of almost half its population that is dependent on the Himalayan rivers’ basin drainage. Realisation must dawn on the possible shifts in riparian paths, or rivers drying up due to massive earthquakes.

Renewables are set to displace coal as the top source of energy for electricity production globally in 2025, the International Energy Agency said Wednesday. In its annual report on the electricity market, the IEA said that renewables -- in particular from solar panels -- should see their share of total electricity production surpass a third of the total, passing from 30 percent last year to 37 percent in 2026.If nuclear power, which the IEA sees hitting a record next year, is included, almost half of the world's electricity will be generated by low-emissions sources by 2026, up from a share of just under 40 percent in 2023.The strong growth in renewables will outpace the increased demand for electricity in industrialised countries as part of efforts to reach carbon neutrality, said the IEA. "The power sector currently produces more CO2 emissions than any other in the world economy, so it's encouraging that the rapid growth of renewables and a steady expansion of nuclear power are together on course to match all the increase in global electricity demand over the next three years," said IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol. That may also turn out to be the case in China , where coal produces more than half of electricity, but much depends on hydroelectric production and the pace of the economic recovery.Nevertheless, the IEA sees a slow structural decline in coal use, even if developing nations will account for most of the increase in electricity demand in coming years. It expects electricity produced from coal to drop by 1.7 percent per year on average through 2026, after a 1.6 percent increase last year due to low levels of hydroelectric power produced in China and India Electricity produced from natural gas should increase by around 1 percent per year during the period. The IEA expects electricity produced from nuclear power plants to hit next year the record level it set in 2021 as France finishes repairing a number of reactors and new ones are brought on line in China, India, Japan and South Korea

conceive of India as an explicitly Hindu nation, despite the fact that the country has a population of more than two hundred million Muslims. In 2019, several months after Modi’s reëlection, the Supreme Court of India—after a prolonged legal dispute—allowed for the construction of a Hindu temple on the site, which many Hindus believe is the birthplace of the Hindu deity Ram. (Many Hindu nationalists also claim that the mosque was built on the ruins of a previous temple to Ram.) But the dispute that was settled in favor of the Hindu party by the Supreme Court a couple of years ago was what is called a title suit. But, nonetheless, they say, For the following reasons, we think that it should all go to the Hindu party, and we’ll give the Muslims five acres elsewhere.
