Farm union leaders are seeking guarantees, backed by law, a minimum support price (MSP) for crops. Farm policy experts argue that buying all farm produce at state-set minimum support prices is economically unviable. To placate protesters, the government might agree to provide them a bonus over and above the minimum support price for 2024. It has fixed this year's minimum support price for wheat at ₹2,275/100 kg, 7% higher than in 2023.

This aligns with other evidence indicating that officially procured crop output accounts for around 11 per cent of total crop output and seven per cent of total agricultural output. Announced at the beginning of the sowing season for certain crops, MSP is determined by the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP). The Committee recommended that the MSP and procurement support policy, designed for cereals during the Green Revolution time, be revisited. The procurement of crops at a declared MSP can be the prerogative of the States as per their specific need. However, expanding MSP through procurement to all crops involves hefty fiscal costs –– nearly one-third of MSP to back MSP through procurement.

According to EPB data, 86 per cent of all exports to South Korea in FY ’23 were made up of apparel. The Mizoram NGO Coordination Committee (NGOCC) has urged the Centre to reconsider its decision to fence the India-Myanmar border and suspend the Free Movement Regime (FMR) with the neighbouring country. Shah had recently said that the Centre has decided to erect a fence along the India-Myanmar border and review the FMR. In his meeting with Shah in Delhi last week, Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma had urged the Union Home Minister not to construct the India-Myanmar border fence in Mizoram even if it is erected in neighbouring Manipur. Four states -- Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh -- share a 1,643-km-long international border with Myanmar. The FMR allows people living on both sides of the border to travel within 16 km of each other's territory without a visa.

These parts are then subject to the high tariffs the government has put in place to protect the local manufacturers, raising overall costs. Mr. Chandrasekhar’s documents were addressed to India’s Finance Minister last month to lobby for lower tariffs in the annual budget. India does not do that and imposes “high” tariffs on many components, he said. “No country with high tariffs has or can attract” them.

“Canada Calling: Extortion accused freed after two days, sends jitters among local Indian community”, Indian Express, February 14, 2024:“Canada’s notoriously lenient bail system is frequently likened to a revolving door. Legal “reforms” a few years ago have meant a person accused of committing a crime can walk out fairly soon after their arrest. I have put the word “reforms” in quotation marks deliberately because, while that was the stated purpose, it can be argued that these changes haven’t been for the better. In fact, they appeared to have incentivized criminals to commit crimes again. For the Indian community in Brampton—and across Canada, really—this catch-and-release system came painfully close to the bone last week when an accused, Arundeep Thind, walked out soon after his arrest by Canadian police.
