Shadow fleet tankers shipping dirty fuel in a setback for clean-up efforts
The growing shadow fleet of tankers transporting sanctioned Iranian, Venezuelan and Russian oil is filling up with the cheapest fuel available, hindering industry efforts to use cleaner fuel to cut shipping emissions, according to shipping data and sources. Lloyd's List Intelligence estimates the shadow fleet had grown to around 630 tankers from 530 a year ago, to make up 14.5% of the overall global tanker fleet. Under the so-called IMO 2020 convention adopted by the United Nations' International Maritime Organization (IMO), ships have to switch to low sulphur fuel from the higher sulphur fuel diesel the industry has used for decades. "A lot of shadow vessels have no scrubbers but they buy high sulphur fuel oil when they are in Russia," one industry source said. This means that ships can still get high sulphur fuel at ports servicing those countries, people involved in the fuel shipping trade say.

World unemployment to fall slightly in 2024: UN

"The report found that 183 million people meet the definition of unemployed, meaning they are actively looking for work and are immediately available. For men, the figure was 69.2 percent. "Despite our efforts to reduce global inequalities, the labour market remains an uneven playing field," ILO Director-General Gilbert Houngbo is quoted as saying in a press release. "To achieve a sustainable recovery whose benefits are shared by all... we must place inclusion and social justice at the core of our policies and institutions," Houngbo said.The ILO is the oldest specialised UN agency and brings together employers, unions and governments from around the world.

Farmers must kill 4.2 million chickens after bird flu hits Iowa egg farm
DES MOINES, Iowa: More than 4 million chickens in Iowa will have to be killed after a case of the highly pathogenic bird flu was detected at a large egg farm, the state announced Tuesday. Last week, the virus was confirmed at an egg farm west of Minneapolis, Minnesota, leading to the slaughter of nearly 1.4 million chickens. Although bird flu has become somewhat common among poultry, its spread to cattle has added to worries about the disease. In May, a second dairy farmworker was diagnosed with bird flu, and the virus was detected in both beef and milk. It has been confirmed on dairy cattle farms in nine states.
