From July 1, cognisable offences will be registered under Section 173 of the BNSS, instead of Section 154 of the CrPC. First Information Reports (FIRs) are filed through the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network Systems (CCTNS), a programme that functions under the National Crime Records Bureau. “Even when cases were being registered under IPC, police had the provision to register cases in Tamil, Marathi, Gujarati among others. Another patch has been added to make the filing easier under the new criminal laws,” the official said. “Though forensics has been made compulsory in all crimes punishable by over seven years, not all States have the required capacity and trained officials.

NILGIRIS : A male wild elephant calf that was abandoned by his mother at Maruthamalai Foothills near Coimbatore and shifted to Theppakadu elephant camp in Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR) on June 9 died due to an ulcer on Friday night. The ulcer was found by the veterinarian team which conducted the postmortem on the four-month-old. Veterinary Assistant Surgeons K Rajesh Kumar and Ganesh Naduvattam held the postmortem in the presence of MTR Deputy Director P Arunkumar and representatives of an NGO. We usually fed lactogen to the animal and it often drank one to one-and-a-half litres. However, the animal died at 9.30 on Friday night,” said a forest official.

Punjab Police on Sunday arrested five shooters of Canada-based terrorist Lakhbir Singh Landa gang and recovered four illegal weapons smuggled from Pakistan from their possession. Sharma said based on further investigations, the police arrested five more members of the Landa gang, identified as Jashanpreet Singh, Gursharan Singh, Harmanjit Singh, Gurbaj Singh and Amritpal Singh, all from Tarn Taran district. “During investigation, it came to light that Jashanpreet Singh and Gursharan worked on the instructions of Lakhbir Landa and imported weapons from Pakistan, supplied weapons, and conducted recce as directed by Landa,” the commissioner of police said. The gang members were involved in extortion from businessmen in Tarn Taran, Amritsar, and Jalandhar, he added. External Affairs Minister S.
