India’s open ecosystems face an unusual threat: trees
Woody encroachment entails the conversion of open habitats to habitats with greater tree cover and/or shrub density. This is a dire prospect because open ecosystems are characterised by a grassy understory and a scattering of native tree species. A different colonialism threatens open ecosystems today: instead of timber, many see trees as providers of carbon sequestration potential, and open ecosystems as encroachments that deprive humans of access to this potential. In fact, most of India’s open ecosystems have stories to tell of ruin led by artificially introduced plants. We also need long-term ecological monitoring in open ecosystems because they provide valuable fine-scale information.

BJP legislators told reporters outside the assembly that democracy was "murdered" by the Speaker at the behest of the JMM-led government. ITC posts Q1 profit of ₹4,917 crore, misses estimates
Tobacco-to-hotels conglomerate ITC missed first quarter profit estimates on Thursday, as higher expenses and challenges at its paperboards and packaging business hurt margins. Demand in ITC's paperboards, paper and packaging business, which makes up roughly a tenth of its revenue, has fallen in recent quarters due to competition with cheaper Chinese products, squeezing its overall sales and earnings. The Sunfeast biscuits maker posted a profit of ₹4,917 crore ($587.4 million) for the first quarter ended June 30, from ₹4,902 crore a year earlier. Revenue from operations for the company increased 7.2 crore to ₹18,220 crore, mainly helped by growth in its cigarettes segment, even as its paperboards, paper and packaging business declined nearly 7 per cent. Total expenses rose nearly 11 per cent.
