When kids get their hair cut by Cruzado at Farm Pond Park, it's free — as long as they talk with him about a book they read. When they arrive at the park, Cruzado peppers them with open-ended questions to guide the conversation and get kids to open up. According to a whiteboard set up at Farm Pond, students have read books such as "Have You Filled a Bucket Today? About 45 students — from rising kindergartners to high school students — are receiving free haircuts this summer. Haircuts are held outside at Farm Pond Park on Tuesdays and Thursdays by appointment.

Signature Theatre has done quite nicely adapting to our not-entirely-voluntary age of virtual theater. Earlier this season, Matthew Gardiner’s digital productions of Simply Sondheim and Midnight at the Never Get, shot in collaboration with multimedia outfit Chiet Productions, both exuded Signature’s live theater pizzazz, while beautifully fulfilling the audio-visual demands of smooth on-screen presentation. But the company’s latest and final show in their digital Signature Features season, Dominique Morisseau’s Detroit ’67 (★★☆☆☆), just misses that model combo of enthralling live theater rendered with televisual appeal. Director Candis C. Jones and the five-person cast, all making their Signature mainstage debuts, certainly carve out enthralling moments in Morisseau’s prize-winning play. Several lessons are spelled out, but only Chelle and Lank learning to understand each other better really bears much fruit.

There are few things as local as a town farmers market. It brings together local people, local vendors, and farmers markets have rules in place to make sure the produce and products are local, too. Edith Murnane is the executive director of Mass Farmers Market, a nonprofit organization that advocates on behalf of farmers in the state. The Daily News took a look at the rules and regulations at some farmers markets around the area and spoke with a few folks who run them to understand the reasoning behind that. The farmers market does not specifically state how much produce can come from other local farms.

FRAMINGHAM — Jared and Josh Grigg spend their career helping others as Framingham firefighters/EMTs, but for the last eight months they’ve been helping keep people safe in another way. The brothers were activated as part of the National Guard and helped with COVID-19 relief efforts throughout the state. Jared Grigg, 32, is a staff sergeant with the National Guard, and has now returned to his duties as a firefighter. Josh Grigg, 30, a sergeant, remains active with the National Guard for a few more weeks before returning to work. “We certainly missed having them here part of our team, but we knew their mission with the National Guard was similar to our mission here — being in service to people of need,” said Dutcher.

But he'd say he is just one of more than a dozen residents in the neighborhood trying to make a park a reality. Hart said shortly after the business closed, there was talk of reusing the property for commercial and industrial purposes. Remediation work has been completed over the past few decades so town officials say they believe the site to be safe for use by residents. Town Manager Michael Herbert said the town acquired the property from the owner through back taxes. Work to get rid of the fencing on the site is underway, Herbert said.

The J&J vaccine was administered to healthcare workers from mid-February in a research study, which was completed in May, with 477,234 health workers vaccinated, joint lead investigator Glenda Gray told a media briefing. South Africa’s health regulator approved the J&J shot in April, and it is being used in the national vaccine programme alongside Pfizer’s. Gray said the single-shot J&J vaccine offered 91% to 96.2% protection against death, while offering 67% protection against hospitalisation when the Beta coronavirus variant dominates and about 71% protection against hospitalisation when the Delta variant dominates. “This was our primary endpoint and we are able to say this vaccine protected health workers against death,” she added. (This story corrects paragraph 4 to show protection rates are against hospitalisation, not infection.)

The 34-member committee voted 23 to 11 to shelve the amendment that Bolsonaro had advocated for weeks, claiming the country’s electronic voting system is open to fraud. Critics say Bolsonaro, like former U.S. President Donald Trump, is sowing doubts in case he loses next year’s presidential election. The amendment called for adoption of printed receipts that can be counted if any election result is disputed, a paper trail that would change the current all-electronic voting system. Bolsonaro, who is expected to seek a second term, has spent hours on social media attacking the electronic voting system, without providing evidence of fraud. Bolsonaro’s comments came after Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes approved an investigation into the president’s unfounded accusations that Brazil’s electronic voting system is vulnerable to fraud.

(Reuters) – For the second time in a month football dominated both the front and back pages of newspapers in Argentina as a shocked nation dissected the news that Lionel Messi was leaving Barcelona. Following Diego Maradona’s death last year, Messi is the best-known face in Argentine sport and a category apart for the country’s media. Most news sites have sections dedicated to domestic leagues, the national team, rugby and other sports. Broadcaster TyC Sports had 14 Messi-related stories on their home page; the normally staid La Nacion and sports newspaper Ole had seven each. La Nacion asked: ‘What if Messi stays at Barcelona?’($1 = 0.8451 euros)(Reporting by Andrew Downie; Editing by Christian Radnedge)
