Volkswagen in talks over $3 billion deal for Europcar
PARIS (Reuters) -A consortium led by German automaker Volkswagen is in advanced talks to buy Europcar in a deal that would value the French car rental company’s equity at about 2.5 billion euros ($3 billion). Europcar confirmed on Tuesday it was discussing a potential offer at around 0.50 euros per share, after sources earlier told Reuters that Volkswagen had rekindled talks and was honing in on a deal. A tie-up could be announced as soon as Wednesday if talks about an agreement in principal are successful, two sources told Reuters. Volkswagen declined to comment, as did Anchorage, the lead fund that took control of Europcar last year along with other investment firms. Volkswagen sold the company to French financial investor Eurazeo in 2006 for 3.3 billion euros, including debt.

Framingham startup has new e-bike designed to assist police departments
FRAMINGHAM — A local company that was created to give a boost to women who have been incarcerated has unveiled a new product that is designed to assist police departments. “We want to create a bike that serves the community.”Randolph founded 1854 Cycling in 2016. The pandemic slowed the business, and 1854 Cycling looked for new space in Framingham. Beyond that, a drone will be connected to the bikes — one drone per six electric bikes — Randolph said. The electric bike system will be marketed as a six-bicycle package, which includes all software and hardware on the bike, as well as the drone.

LVMH shares edge higher as sales and profits rise
PARIS (Reuters) – LVMH’s shares eged higher on Tuesday after the world’s biggest luxury goods group posted higher sales and profits, driven by surging sales of fashion lines and handbags by Dior, Fendi and Louis Vuitton. LVMH shares were up 0.3% in early session trading. “We are encouraged by Louis Vuitton and Dior’s exceptional brand positioning across regions and sustained local luxury consumer demand,” wrote brokerage Cowen & Company, which kept an ‘outperform’ rating on LVMH shares. Overall sales at LVMH, which also owns champagne and cosmetics labels, rose by 84% year-on-year in the second quarter on a like-for-like basis, which strips out currency swings, and stood at 14.7 billion euros ($17.33 billion). “We think much of this will be repeated in H2 in the absence of a sector momentum shift: as long as the sector performs, LVMH will perform better,” wrote brokerage Jefferies, which kept a ‘buy’ rating on LVMH shares.

Puppy stolen from front yard in Wellesley; two Framingham residents charged
WELLESLEY — Police say "Ember" is back home after she was taken from her front yard last week. In a press release, police said they arrested a 40-year-old Framingham man at his home on Sunday and charged him with stealing Ember. A Redwing Road family had put 8-month-old Ember, a black lab, on its tether in the front yard sometime during the afternoon. “Wellesley Police Officers and the family inspected the tether and the clasp, and found everything to be working,” according to the release. Police charged the man with receiving stolen property worth more than $1,200, and conspiracy.

Woman accused of twice striking Framingham police officer with her car
FRAMINGHAM — A local woman is accused of twice striking a police officer with her car early last Friday before driving away, authorities said. Police arrested the 38-year-old woman after the 12:20 a.m. incident, police spokeswoman Lt. Rachel Mickens said Monday. When officers arrived, they spoke to the woman, who was in the car. “While they (the officers) were trying to speak to her, she struck an officer with the vehicle, and then struck them a second time,” Mickens said. The woman was arraigned later Friday in Framingham District Court and released without bail.

Biden taps Suffolk DA Rachael Rollins to become state's top prosecutor
Biden announced Rollins as one of eight nominees to serve as U.S. attorneys. In 2018, Rollins topped a five-person Democratic primary for Suffolk DA with 39% of the vote, then took 80% of the vote in the general election. Baker, a Republican, would be responsible for selecting an interim Suffolk County district attorney to succeed Rollins until the 2022 election if she departs. He could tap a member of his own party — who did not have a candidate on the ballot last cycle — but such a move could rankle legislative leaders and many Suffolk County voters. Rollins' departure would require Boston voters to select a new district attorney in 2022, one year after they will choose a permanent mayor to serve a full term.

Former Framingham Parks Department employee's home burns. GoFundMe started
FRAMINGHAM — For 32 years, Linda Libby worked for the Framingham Parks Department before retiring last year. On June 29, Libby's mobile home in Sturbridge was destroyed in a fire, her sister Stella Bonin said. “It’s burned to the point there’s no way to repair it right now.”Bonin started a GoFundMe fundraiser for Libby. Bonin's goal is to raise $10,000 to help Libby pay for expenses that aren’t covered by insurance. She had recently returned to the Parks Department on a part-time basis, but has not worked since the fire.
