Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has called on leaders of her Awami League party to shun violence and allow people to exercise their right to vote unhindered in the national elections. "I don't want to see any clashes or violence. If someone from my party engages in it, they will not be spared either. I will take immediate action." Bangladesh has passed another day without a death from dengue, as the toll from the disease since January remained unchanged at 1,692. However, another 177 people were hospitalised due to the disease in a 24-hour count on Thursday, taking the tally this year to 320,055. Of the patients newly hospitalised with the disease, 40 cases were in Dhaka, while 137 were outside the capital. Currently, 1,246 patients are hospitalised with dengue. The dengue outbreak has been significantly worse this year than in previous years.

DHAKA, Dec 21, 2023 (BSS) - Three million US dollars, collected as death compensation and dues of 65 deceased Bangladeshi workers in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia at different times of November, has been sent to the 'Death Compensation Fund' of Bangladesh Wage Earners Welfare Board here. As per the instructions of Dr Mohammad Javed Patwari, Bangladesh ambassador to Saudi Arabia, the Labor Welfare Wing of the Embassy has started the process of collecting the outstanding salaries, service benefits and accident compensations of Bangladeshis who died in Saudi Arabia, said a release here. In continuation of this initiative, the sum was handed over to the concerned authorities of Bangladesh for distribution among the entitled families. Of the total, 51 lakh Saudi Riyal was given to the family of Sagar Patwari, who was killed in Dammam in 2006, and 48.80 lakh Saudi Riyal was given to the family of Abiran Begum, who was killed in Riyadh in 2019, the release added.

The Rupsha Express train from Chilahati to Khulna narrowly escaped an accident after rail sleepers - components that maintain the correct space of the gauges between rail tracks - were removed near Dinajpur's Birampur station.
